Last night I was talking to Albert, the Director of The Visiting Angels, about getting the assistance for VG, and the subject of Long Term Care Insurance came up. And after that discussion, I thought I would mention it here in the forums.

Albert said that most long term care packages would cover in-home care, such as we are doing for VG. Obviously it would depend on which package you purchased and what it covers. Albert said that a minimum of $100 per day for in-home care would be best. A minimum of $100.

I know I need to re-visit my long term care package to see what my daily amount is. I certainly want to be able to stay in my house for a long as possible and not have to sell my house.

So think about it. If you haven't already gotten this coverage, you might seriously consider getting some.

Wife and I signed up about six months ago. With us both 60+, we need to preserve as much of our estate as possible to take care of our disabled daughter Kimberly after we're gone, and we don't want in-home or nursing home costs for one of us eating it up. After a certain age, it is an important part of estate planning.

The retirement system of which I am a member came out with an offer for long term care. They made some deal with the insurance provider that one could buy the insurance with no physical exam required. With no family to speak of except a seldom seen brother, I applied. Honestly answered questions on the form and because of some health history I was denied coverage. I really wanted it too. Oh well, Judy seems like a kind-hearted soul. If things take a turn for the worse I can always go stay in her garage.:D

I was denied coverage when I applied for mine. I answered the questions honestly also. So I demanded a review of my application, with a polite but assertive letter, plus a supporting letter from my physician. I was then approved, thank goodness.

Yes, I can be a kind-hearted soul on occasion, and people projects are my specialty! I don't have a garage, but you can always stay in my guest room, assuming my mom doesn't move in with me first.

I wasa very surprised that I was approved for coverage. I had five cardiac bypasses in 1994. However, because I have controlled my weight, eat right, exercise a lot and recently passed with great results a follow-up arteriogram, the salesperson was able to convince the company that I was less of a risk than most men my age. She's a heck of a salesperson!
