long-term razor edge retention

Ever notice how some knives, when you put a super-duper super-sharp hair-poppin' edge on a blade .... then you leave it for a month or two or three, and that edge is gone ?? You haven't used the knife at all, but that edge is long gone ??

I don't know why that is.

So here's a SOG story for you. I keep my SOG Recon Bowie affixed on a work belt. Well, I pulled that belt off the shelf for the first time in over 8 months. Hadn't used it, hadn't touched the Recon Bowie.
Being curious, I pulled out the Bowie from it's sheath and it was still hair-poppin' sharp, no problem deforesting my forearm.

Other SOG's I have don't do that, but the Recon Bowie sure does !!

Cheers,

Carl

I've noticed my vulcan does what you explain. I can't figure it out but I don't mind touching it up every few weeks. I just wish it was an easier blade to sharpen as the tanto can be challenging.

When did you get the Recon? I've been keeping my eye out for them but can't seem to find one yet. When were they released?

There's a new version of it coming out soon. Check the new knives on the SOG website.

I thought he was referring to the new version. I thought it was out but I checked their site and it's not.

I wish they didn't show these new versions so early.

I've had knives to do that myself, it's very annoying. I don't have time for
regular touch-ups.. Never seen it on a SOG, Buck, or Ka-bar though..

Im thinking its probably because of an oxidization effect... remember the edge is microscopic so a smal amount of oxides can make it less sharp. do you keep your blade oiled?

I've still got my original SOG Recon Bowie too. I did have two of them, but I sold my unused one shortly after SOG stopped making them. I needed some moolah and I figured I would help someone out that wanted one and now didn't have the chance anymore. I doubt I'll ever get rid of my used one. It has all kinds of character these days. Definitely shows all the wear and tear I've put on it beautifully.

Fletcher,

yep, I did the same. I managed to get 2 into my collection, then a SOG pal wanted one and I felt sorry for him, so I let one go, It's still "in the family" sorta/kinda ....

Cheers,

Carl
