I have found Spyderco’s Rex 45 to be a carefree steel that holds a very sharp edge forever. I have carried this Shaman EDC for about 18 months, and it has a couple chipped areas near the tip and on the belly, but I have never sharpened or stropped it. This knife has cut lots of vines and small limbs in the yard and been used as a light chopper. I may sharpen this blade, but not in 2021.

This is the first Shaman I have owned, and the knife and steel have been a great combo for me. The knife is not perfect and could use a few minor refinements, and I am retiring it honorably in the ongoing search for a more perfect folding knife and steel combo. I found the compression lock to be positive and secure during use. One of Spydercos best knives.

What has your Rex 45 experience been?

I have been using various Spyderco's in Rex45 for about 2 years. Rex45 has become one of favorite steels. I love how well it holds a very sharp edge.
The first Spyderco I got was a para3 in s110v. I was disappointed in how fast the s110v lost it's initial sharpness. I find that Rex45 holds a very sharp edge far better. I'm not looking for a working edge, I want a steel that will stay very sharp for a while. In my experience Rex45 holds it's sharpness very well.
I work as a floor covering installer so I am commonly cutting things like foam carpet pad where high sharpness is important.

I can't speak to the shaman.
I have a chief in rex 45 and that has been chippy.
Yet I also have endura in hap 40 (supposed to be the same thing)
That has been one of my favorites.

Doesn't chip and holds a sharp edge for a long time. Also fairly easy to sharpen couldn't be better imo.

Looks clean in the pic, if I zoomed on it you would see this knife is well used.

I have been using REX45 as my primary blade for the last year or so. Excellent steel, stays sharp, no chipping for me although I have edge thinned out around 15dps. Super easy to bring back to sharp and holds an awesome edge for what I need it for.

Do you see any difference in edge holding between the Rex 45 and the Hap 40? I have heard that Spyderco's Seki factory runs Hap 40 softer than Golden runs Rex 45.

No I can't say there is much difference that I can notice.
I don't use the Golden much anymore because of the edge being more brittle.
