I'm sad to say my blades won't see much, if any use during the winter months. When that time actually arrives, what would you recommend for storing the knives for a few months?

Things to do and things to avoid would be appreciated!

Well your climate will affect how you should store your knives. Here in good old hot as hell Vegas. I just throw what I'm not using. Into a plastic tool box. In the sheath with no oil. except my stripped Ka-bar gets stored in the kydex. Instead of the leather sheath when not in use. Though one time I did see my silver coins tarnish. When I left my fire safe open during a wet spell. And closed the lid before the moisture could evaporate.

How you store will depend on what you have to store.

If your collection isn't too extensive then you could go a bit doomsday prepper. Get yourself a section of 4" PVC tube, an endcap and a threaded cleanout, and maybe a couple of 4" gaskets just to be sure you get a good, waterproof tight seal. After giving them a slight wiping down with oil, store the extra blades in there with some desiccants to absorb any moisture that was in the air at the time of sealing.

Wow that is thorough! I'm talking about storing a bk9, bk2 and hopefully a bk16 in the near future.

if they are not stripped, they should be fine in their sheaths, maybe wipe the edge with some oil before putting away.

If I remember correctly. A few of the guys around here say, J&J baby mineral oil is a cheap fix for oil. Those who are more inclined. Might go for some Inhibitor V-80 products. Though I'm not aware of how well it works in real life. So maybe one of our seasoned knife owners could enlighten us on V-80. But the stuff looks promising enough.
