Ok, I've seen some threads dance around this, so here goes.

I've got this friend, and he's concerned with getting a couple of survival knives, and storing them in case things get really bad. Hypothetically.

Now, disregarding handles, how would you store the steel? I, um, my friend was thinking of packing the steel in grease, then double ziploc bags, then perhaps inside a small section of pvc pipe. Of course, my friend would use water in a bathtub to force any air out of the ziploc bag before shutting, and using uncooked rice as a dessicant, but is there something he might be overlooking? Any thoughts?

Well.. cosmoline has been used for decades to store old military rifles.. I've known folks who cleaned the gook off 50-year-old surplus and had the things look brand new.

Might be something to look into -- I think you can buy in a spray can?

Oh.. and if you.. uh.. your friend.. is expecting things to get bad enough to need to be burying weapons, might I suggest adding even an old C&R Mauser rifle? Cheaper than a good blade, with a heck of lot longer range..

.. and already packed in cosmoline. :D

Cosmoline is available on page 240 of Brownells catalog no. 54.
There are several other rust inhibitors listed there. www.brownells.com

Another approach might be to search the archives on long-term firearms storage at www.thefiringline.com

I believe that the subject of rust prevention has been discussed extensively in the context of long-term firearms storage. Much should be applicable to knives.
