Hi,

Wanted to finally make my first post after lurking for quite some time. I've been into knives ever since I got a Swiss Army knife as a present when I was in elementary school. I'm now married with two kids. Lets just say I'm middle aged. :D Over the years I've been acquiring knives and did not know anyone at all that liked knives. I can't call what I was doing collecting as there was no rhyme or reason to what I got. I stumbled across this forum and was pleasantly surprised that so many have the same disease I have. I've been learning a great deal lurking around here and want to say that there are a great bunch of guys here with a whole lot of knowledge. Over the years I've lost, given away, broken, etc. many knives mostly cheap stuff. I've just recently been getting into better quality knives since I can afford them now and also after learning about them here. This is the state of my collection at the moment. Looking forward to learning a lot more about knives.

Regards,
Andrew

Welcome Andrew:). That's a pretty nice collection. I'm impressed that you bought a Sebenza without being on these or any other knife forums. I figure an easy majority of high end knife buyers are people who frequent knife forums. I see you're in the Bay Area. I'm in the East Bay. We hold get togethers with other knife collectors/users in the East Bay once every month or two. Feel free to email me if you'd like me to notify you of the next one. These get togethers can easily have $40k+ worth of knives. It's like a little knife show.

That sounds bad ass, I wish someone would host something similar in B.C.

Coolest part about it is it takes place in a sushi restaurant. That's right, all the talk about sheeple and we bust out with all kinds of blades, including the occasional swords in the middle of a pretty busy restaurant:D:thumbup:

Hey Andrew...

Noticed that most of your knives are combo edged. Any particular reasons why? Which one is your user/ EDC?

Welcome.... to the madness. :D

Your collection is perfect. The only other place you can go with it is to replace all those combo edge knives with plain edge.

Then you will have achieved nirvana. ;)

That would be great, please do let me know when the next one is. My only concern is for my wallet when I see all the awesome blades.

I first saw the CRK in a knife store when on vacation in Solvang, CA. Really loved it and the guys at the store all had them. I was very tempted to get it right there and then but it was a bit expensive to spend on something I did not know anything about. I found this site when doing research and that's when I picked it up.

Hi Azad

Initially bought combo edge blades purely for aesthetic reasons. Again I wasn't really collecting, more like picking up knives just because I liked them and liked the way it looked. Knew nothing about them. But over time I do find that it comes in handy and it just kind of stuck. I EDC mostly the Mini Grip, and the Sequel.

Andrew

Thanks I think ;) . Yeah I do get the impression after lurking for some time that the knife purists prefer the plain edge. For some reason the combo edge just caught my eye more. I've learned though that a plain edge kept properly sharpened can do what the serrated edge can do. Now I just have to learn how to properly sharpen my knives. Anybody want to buy a combo edge knife? :p

Welcome! Nice start to a collection that I'm sure will grow now that you've found this place. :)

I figure when it comes to serrations,to each their own.I see you don't have any fixed blades yet though.Hey,welcome to blade forums!

Greetings Andrew: Welcome. Nice collection. You seem to have quite a few of your bases covered. Your knife collecting history sounds very familiar. I joined this forum one month later than you. The ongoing sharing of knowledge and experience by this forum's members has motivated many people to go from knife users to knife nuts in a relatively short time. Welcome to the club. If you continue to read, learn and participate in the discussions you should at least be prepared to be effected by what appears to be a fairly common syndrome. I thought I would be immune. The following is just my opinion, but it is based upon a lot of lurking and reading. It is also my personal experience. Getting more knives leads to getting more knives. Buying a knife based upon a practical justification leads to finding more practical justifications to buy another knife. In time, you will run out of practical justifications and start buying because you are "rounding out your collection" or addressing a specialized need. This is eventually followed by finally admitting that " I'm buying this knife because I want to." Now that I have all these knives, I really need some sharpening equipment to take advantage of all this high quality blade steel. Again, since you have been reading for over a year, you know this means starting with a sharpmaker and can soon progress through guided rod systems, to an Edgepro, a belt grinder, paper wheels or bench stones. The last few are optional. You may also experience the need for a custom regrind. Then there is maintenance, repair and tinkering. Many of us would rather remove our own spleen with a butter knife then send one of our favorite knives back to the manufacture. Not inevitably, but often, for many of us comes the dreaded CUSTOM KNIFE. I just ordered my first one last night and fully admitted to myself that I have become the obsessive knife nut whose sanity I questioned when I first found this forum. Just thought I would let you know what may be waiting for you if you stay. On the other hand -- what do i know? I'm old and senile. OldDude1

Nice knives Andrew. Welcome to Bladeforums. Empty your paypal account and don't look in the For Sale section unless you want a 2nd mortgage. :D

great, the serration nazis are out again...

:) Ahhh... Assumptions... Though most of the forummers here do not prefer serrated edges I do like them, my EDC is a combo edged all black Endura 4. The serrations are pretty handy. Especially to start a cut on something tough and they do stay sharp a lot longer. For a user serrated edges definitely has its place but all my safe queens are plain edged. Only combo edged knives I have left is my Endura 4 CE, a mini Manix CE and a Dragonfly SE. If you want serrations Spyderco makes some of the best serrations I've ever used; very effective. Nice collection of knives you have there...
