Long Wolf Longhorn weak blade retention?

I just got a Longhorn and it's almost perfect. It has a solid lockup, no blade play, perfectly centered blade, and it's very sharp. The problem is that the blade retention sucks. The blade comes out way too easily, and while that's great in that the blade flicks out lightning quick, it just doesn't feel that safe to carry even if it's a tip down pocket clip. I also have the Blackfoot, a smaller version of the longhorn, and it has great blade retention similar to a Spyderco Military. So I'm confused, is my Longhorn a dud or is the weak retention normal?

I have neither, but they both are two of the best looking knives I think Lone Wolf makes.

As far as blade retention goes, I suppose you have checked to ensure there is a ball detent and that it is lining up with the blade indention. If not then it should go back. If it is there and lines up then I can think of two things to try. The first is to tighten the pivot a little, and then use loctite to keep it there. The second is one you may or may not wish to try and that would be to disassemble the knife and put more bend into the locking liner so that it applies more pressure on the blade when the knife is closed.

I imagine that the latter is what Lone Wolf would try first.

Be very careful if you decide to add more tension to the lockbar. If you don't have prior experience with this I would strongly advise against it. Tighten the pivot up a little bit and see if you can find a happy medium of tension/smoothness. If that doesn't do enough to make you happy give Lone Wolf a call (503) 431 6777 or email them at customerservice@lonewolfknives.com. They are an awesome local Oregon company that knows how to treat their customers with respect. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Good point. I've done on quite a few of mine with a lot of success and like having a stiffer lock.
