I would like to get a longer handle for my Kangee. Anyone know if the the cold steel handles work without modification? Specifically the War Hammer handle. Any other options?

I made my own tomahawk handle this summer. I had a larger than useual tomahawk made and I wanted something long enough for 2 hands. I bought some rough sawn straight grained ash cut it to a rough shape with a table saw than used a spokeshave and sand paper to get it to the final shape, it was a fun project and I plan on making more.

I have an old Cold Steel War Hammer, and unless they have dramatically changed the dimension on the eye, it is skinnier than the Kangee. I just threaded the war hammer haft into my Kangee just to see what would happen. It caught at the top but the fit at the bottom of the eye was not even close. It is an old haft on a hammer that I used for major demolition on my remodel, so the head has ground its way up the shaft. Despite that, I would have to say that it isn't worth trying--it was a big gap. That long haft leads to a lot of force on the head, no shim is going to last long. AntCaps has the right idea, start from scratch with a spokeshave. My plan is to get an ax handle from the hardware store and spend some quality time with a belt sander, then finish it off with the spokeshave.

Thanks guys. These replies have been very helpful.

it isn't too hard to make a hickory or ash handle, if you have a few woodcraft tools and access to the lumber or a properly sized tree

Before. After got the haft from Track of the Wolf a little sanding and a finish.
