Well it turns out Ol Bill DeShivs was absolutely correct.
He says length does matter. I put a longer clip on my Hold Out I I I and without sanding the side of the knife it is easily pulled out of my pocket. I didnt bend the spring part of the clip to make it easier yet it is just fine on very thick winter pants; even in the back pocket which has a large YKK zipper.
Who da thought ? How can this be ? Stay tuned (you too Cold Steel dudes) . . .

First go to the Cold Steel web site; read in FAQ were it says you can order a replacement pocket clip :
Call Cold Steel. Have nice, professional, person tell you they are sending you a clip. For free no less.

Wait two weeks.
Call back.
Offer to PAY for a pocket clip and pay for expedited shipping if they will just send the bloody thing.
Be told they aren't set up to do this and that they have no clips to send. :grumpy:
Order Cold Steel Hold Out I
Get it in three days.
Take the clip off.
Throw Hold Out I away.
(Or keep it. Who knows; you might need it for something some day.)
Cover screw area on large clip with black magic marker.
Remove clip from Hold Out I I I
Put clip form Hold Out I I I on top of larger clip and screw back onto Hold Out I I I to align all the holes in the clips.
Scribe around small clip to mark where to file large clip. Note there is hardly any material that needs to be removed.
Disassemble.

File large clip including a couple of millimeters down the sides of the large clip. This is easy to blend in and make it look right. A regular file will file the clip. A diamond file is a little easier to control and works well if you have one.
Do some trial and file until the large clip fits.

I bent up the very tip of the large clip where it first contacts the edge of my pocket.

I understand the reason the tip is not that way from the factory (it is over a hole in the scale of the proper knife and the edge of pocket can get under it there) but Gonzo knife modification calls for Gonzo measures . . . just ask your self :
What would Hunter S. Thompson do ? Then . . . with out qualms . . . bend that tip up.
