This is my first post, so it will be longer than my posts after this. Please be gentle, I will admit I know mostly nothing about knives except being made in China isn't a sign a quality. The "best" knives I own are a SOG TWI20-CP Twitch XL and a SOG TWI8-CP Twitch II. I'm a mechanic and cheapo $10 Winchester knives just weren't getting the job done. I like them both but have no idea how good they are except my own use and they've worked well, lock up tight, and have held a decent edge. That's the extent of my knowledge.
Christmas day I received a new knife from my niece with no brand name. It is a karambit style knife with a blade of 3" or so. Unfortunately my niece knows even less about knives than I do. It was made for someone with much smaller hands, has no "ring", and is made in China. Being a cheapo I had no problem grinding on it to make it fit my bear claw. It sharpened decent enough too. It says 440 stainless and after reading a few posts here I'm sure it's made of the lowest grade steel.
I would never tell her it was crap, she's a good kid and didn't know any better. Besides, it brought back some happy childhood memories. I hate to say it but I like it. When I was a lot younger my Grandpa gave me an old 60's or 70's Schrade Hawkbill, I had forgotten it until 2 days ago. It just felt good in my hand, like this new cheapo after some "engineering" on my part. I like the way it handles, it feels like a good utilitarian knife (the karambit design), good for protecting ones self or opening boxes.
I would really like to get a more quality karambit, a folder for sure. If I could get it in a 4/4.5" to 6" blade I would be set. I know it could get expensive but if I could keep it under $200 and maybe closer to $100 I would be pretty happy. I will use it, my SOGs are pretty beat up and aren't even close to what would be called showpieces. So what do you guys suggest? Thank you for any help in advance!
