The manual says the coarse ones will eventually wear out and need replacing. How many times to guys find you can sharpen with them before replacing?

I don't sharpen knives for a living or try to reprofile a bunch of D2 blades. I think the rods will outlast me. I would not let the potential longevity keep me from buying an excellent edge maintainence system.

Cleaning your ceramic rods:

After frequent use the ceramic rods on your sharpener will become a dark gray. This is perfectly normal and is the result of the metal left on the sharpener from your knife blades. When this occurs, ceramic rods must be cleaned to retain their sharpening ability.
  1. Carefully, remove all ceramic rods from your sharpener.
  2. Rub the rods with a sharpener-cleaning block or an ordinary kitchen sink cleaner such as Comet and rinse clean to remove all metal deposits.
You can continue to use the rods until they're worn down, which could take years. Ceramic is pretty tough, unless you're sharpening everyday, they should last for years.

I assumed the rods were solid and not coated, if the medium wear smooth then just resurface them.

In the Sharpmaker video, Mr. Glesser says that the the rods will need replacement every 3 to 5 years depending on frequency of sharpening. I've used the same rods for about 3 years already and they have held up just fine (just back beveled and sharpened an 806D2 with no problems at all). I can guess that mine may really need replacement in about another 4 to 7 years, maybe longer.
