Hello,
today I would like to review an extremely attractive and unusual knife : LONGHUNTER by the British maker Bob Hewitt
Why Longhunter
The period from 1750 to the early decades of the 19th century was an age of great explorations of the American territory. Men such as Daniel Boone (1734-1820), John Duff (1760-1805), Samuel Dale (1772-1841) were traveling in the wilderness of North America, driving scientific, military and hunting expeditions. These men, who often walked in the woods six or more months, they were called " Longhunters ", especially in the states of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Some of them became legendary, for example Hugh Glass (1783-1833, whose story inspired the Oscar-winning film " The Revenant ") who, seriously wounded by a grizzly and subsequently abandoned by two companions who were to take care of him, he could to travel more than 300 kilometers of wild and infested territory by hostile natives, to take his revenge on those who had betrayed him.
LONGHUNTER di B. Hewitt
It is a good-sized knife, and yet agile and quite handy. The thing that strikes you right away is - of course - the look of this knife: the sheath is made by leather and rawhide sheath with various adornments, horsehair, copper and tin cones, glass and bone beads and copper rivets, the handle is made of stag antler and leather , the wrought iron fittings of the 18th century, the blade is hand forged. LONGHUNTER seems to come straight from the set of "The Revenant" or a museum about the history of the Wild West.
But do not think that this is a "movie knife or an object only to be displayed and admired: it is as opposed to a fully efficient and usable tool. The steel blade in O1 steel, 240mm length, is razor sharp and professionally hardened to approximately 58HRC; the oval guard and the connection with the handle are made with care, as well as the through shank which is joined to the metal knob. The horn handle is properly sized and processed, LONGHUNTER is comfortable to handle. The sheath holds perfectly and safely the knife.
LONGHUNTER, once challenged, conveys a feeling hard to describe, takes us back to an age when sometimes men depends on their knife to survive. Hugh Glass would be happy to have this knife at his side!
Cheers, AD
Note: if you want to see a lot of pics about the LONGHUNTER knife, just take a look to my blog http://adoricchi.blogspot.it/2016/06/longhunter-by-b-hewitt.html
