Been a from scratch gun maker for 40 years and have discovered that many folk suffer several misconceptions about that kind of firearm. History buffs will know that people like Daniel Boone and my wife's cousin, Davy Crockett carried their long rifles and used them to the point of them still being famous to this very day. Some call them smoke poles, muzzle loaders, hog rifles, longrifles or guns. Many have heard tales about their Great-Granpap, back in the old days, with his trusty "squirrel rifle" wining some shoot or prize. But how many of you ever seen just such a critter? Here is a photo (I respectfully submit for furtherance of Bawanna's education) of what some have called a camel back rifle, but which is reality a genuine, dyed-in-the-wool, Squirrel Rifle. Looking close, you should be able to discern all the details that make such a weapon what it is. Thank you for allowing me to share this piece of Americana with you.

a masterwork, though I would not trust the character using that gun, he looks downright shadey

I'm trying to reconnoiter weather that squirrel tail (and a beaty it is although we got em much bigger here in the NW) is attached the butt stock, the hat, probably not or the shoulder of the T shirt like officer boards?

I do sense some bamboozaling in the general vicinity of the lock on that thar smoke pole.

Love the hat. I do think the stock is a bit short for Bookie but it's a fine picture.

Could that possibly be the infamous brick out house in the background. Heard so much about it, never seen it.

Worth the price of admission right there.

Haha I had to have a second look at the picture to figure out what squirrel tail you were talking about...Also I'd edit out the curse word you used even though you changed it :/ Karda smashed me for using a word like that to

And thanks for sharing Bookie :) interesting rifle indeed. What's the camel hump for?

Sorry I missed this thread last week or I would of commented on it Bookie. That is a very cool looking camel back rifle. Is your wife really related to Mr. Crockett? It would be pretty darn cool to know you are related to one of America's folk heros.

The camel back stock looks as if it was designed to reduce flash burns in the shooters face. Is that what the design was meant for? I have been a serious firearms collector and competitive shooter since the age of 14. I mainly deal with firearms that shoot cartridges... I have limited experience with the "black powder" guns, but that have always tickled my fancy.

I absolutely loveeeeeeee Kentucky rifles, especially when they have gorgeous tiger striped maple or if they had the rope burning trick applied to the stock. America, and Americans have always held firearms close to their hearts and I am glad to see you breath life back into these pieces of history. I would love to see some pictures of more of your collection.

Man, that is a sweet shooter:)

Truth be told, if I had all the time and place to shoot, I would probably having nothing but black powder guns. I love them. I even carry a short 1858 in a shoulder rig when I go out stomping in the woods. Handy to shoot, won't bust my ears, will flatten any critter I'm bound to run across, and makes a handy smoke signal if I get lost:D

Babahha, consider yourself smashed.

The reasoning is, that this is Aunties house and shes a lady. She reads here sometimes. We have friends here of the gentler nature. We gentlemen mind our manners in front of the ladies, Right?

Awesome Shootin' Iron there Jed. I've always wanted one, but I'm skeered I'd blow me own fingers off loading it.
