Well it’s not really mine, it’s my friend’s. Does that make it more or less weird?

So this stuff has a really nice deep red, is fairly dense (can’t dent it with a fingernail) and has some pretty chatoyance on the edge grain... let me know what you think if you would! Thanks!!

I agree it looks like padauk. Here’s what some padauk looked like on a handle I did:

Padauk. Prepare to have bright red dust everywhere in your shop.
 
I am not a fan of paduak on knives because of then open places in the grain. I find it has a "snaggy" feel. That said, it looks good.
 
Yup. Thats African paduak.

If you want a red wood, I have some extra bloodwood you may like. Much heavier, denser and more durable with closed pores
 
I agree with Paduak. May want to try using a sanding sealer before finishing.
It will probably require a generous first coat followed by a light sanding when it dries. Repeat until the pores have filled.
