Hey, this a pen and pencil set our new comer mikemaupin (Mike Maupin) made for me. It is of dyed burled poplar. I've seen threads here asking about poplar and this is the first example, outside its use for fence rails, I remember seeing. REALLY NICE!

Mike is going to become a real knife maker.

Gorgeous pen & pencil set!

I've done some turning in the past. Been thinking of starting up for next holiday season. I've used most exotic hardwoods, including snakewood and amboyna burl. I'd like to try ivory, but the sticker shock killed me. Moose antler tines should be a good alternative.

This would be a dream, but imagine a set using ivory with mokume or damascus fittings. That would turn a few heads at a kinfe show!

really nice pen set. i think centaur has a good idea..... ivory is a little pricey though. and you'd need to find a pretty large piece or two. if you go for it make sure to post pics

Also check with Laredo7 (Sean). He makes pen sets too and has shown some recently here that he made from his own mokume.

very nice :)
if you use gold fitting then the Ivory won't seem
to be so much money anymore.:D

Damn! Those are really nice. My first prototype pen was from Amboyna, but not nearly as nice of a finish as those.

I have pen working on the next set of Damascus pens. What a pain in my a$$. I spent 10 hours making the billet of 1095 and pure nickel. It has 131 layers and a relatively slow twist. My plan was to have them hot blued to get more contrast. Well I got one pen turned down and polished and was working on the second tonight and it split on me!

My last weld had a slag inclusion in it and I thought all of it got drilled out, but I guess not. I suppose the 0.040 wall thickness didn't help either. Oh well, worse things have happend. I think I am going to go with some cable damascus pens next.

At least that way I only have an hour or two into the billet, so I don't get as mad when I ruin it.;)

Oh yeah, check out the link in my signature to go to my website if you want to see the two pens I have made. One out of mokume and one damascus one.

Sean, you do magnificent work and I hope that you and Mike can exchange notes as time goes by. I know enough about your work but this new fellow impresses me also. I love the set he sent me and will not let them go except in my Will.

Laredo, those pens of yours are outstanding. I made one pen out of aluminom, fluted it and inlayed the flutes with turquoise, I started with the intention of making a set but when I got done with the pen I said " I think the pencil can wait for a bit" :D :D
Thanks Roger for posting the pic and thanks to the rest for the nice compliments. Mike
Ps, Bill Baumbeck has some of the best wood on the planet, if you dont know about him I can post a link.

Mike, I am sorry. I thought I had read it as 'burled'. So what. Still beautiful, regardless.

Roger

Hey Roger, no apology needed. You know I had never seen curly poplar until I got some from Bill. The chatoyance on this stuff is nice. I dont know if he has poplar in a burl or not but he probably dose. Actually that pen set is called the Comfort Series and is supposed to have a silicone rubber grip at the point but I just couldnt bring myself to cut a full inch of that wood off the barrel to do that:(.
I swear that Damascus pen that Laredo posted just knocked me out, I need to talk to that fellow.

Dang Mike, I didn't know you were a pen turner too! Very nice work! :)

You're right about Bill Baumbeck, he's a great guy. I need wood in 6" lengths for straight razor handles, I called him up and said I needed some "drop dead gorgeous" stuff that's stabilized, what do you have on the shelf...he went to the shop and picked out some fantastic looking stuff for me...and he always seems to throw in a free extra piece with every order!:)

Hey, if I make it up to the Bristol area sometime to visit, you'll have to show me some of your techniques for pen turning!

-Darren

Yes, you and Sean need to exchange notes. I am glad you did not put that soft rubber thingie on my set. I prefer the natural stuff as far as it can be taken.

It would be great to meet you Darren, if you get up this way just give me a call, I'm not hard to find. I will email you my number.
Hardest thing about starting a new pen is deciding which piece of Bills wood to use, I have over 100 of his blanks and thought I wasnt ever going to get to make another pen or anything else.
I am recovering from a Vitirous Hemmorage in my left eye caused from Diabetes which left it totally blind but after 3.5 months and 2 operations I have 90% of it back and I am back in my shop as of 2 weeks ago, scared me to death. i believe I will be able to do ok as it is but I hope it continues to improve. I gotta say, that is some beautiful work, both you guys! Mike, I am sure glad the docs could help you, and very glad you are better. Get well, guy! Roger, you have excellent taste!

Dang Mike, that would have scared the heck out of me too! I'm glad to hear that you're recovering well! I think I'll have some time freeing up in the next couple of weeks, I look forward to coming up your way for a visit! :)

That sounds great Darren, heck bring a bunch of these guys with you. I should have my KMG setup by then and you can show me some stuff:) Thanks to all of you for your concern about the eye. i tell you what fellows,if any of you has diabetes or even any signs of it, keep a CLOSE watch on it, my vision was compleatly gone in just seconds, no warning no nothing, just like turning out the light.
Darren, I will be looking forward to your visit, you have my number.
PS, anybody know how long it will take Fed Ex to get a KMG from Ohio to East TN? it was shipped today. Everybody have a good day, Mike M

Mike, you will most likely get it this week. Rob is pretty quick on the shipping, I think. You should get the DC drive in a day or two.
