Good job man, did you re-blast the handle slabs? Nice, but I don't think it's for me...looks too smooth, IMO.

Ya I did reblast it. I think I might go around the whole handle edge rounding it.The handle slabs are just a little too block shaped for me.

Looks good to me.
Probably voids the warranty?
I hope you protected the ceramic ball while you where grinding

The ball never really got close to the grinder? I did have to be carefull not to overheat/distort the Ti while shaping.I am sure I would have to pay for any repairs to the handle or concerns of the lock up, but I'am not too worried about it. I think as cool as CR seems to be they would take care of any problems unless they were directly related to what I did.
See ya!

Not sure, but I don't think that CRK will even touch that Sebenza now. Though I'd be curious to hear what they have to say about it.

Nice work Matt.
That's the beauty of the Sebenzas you can basically do anything you want to it.
One can see you took a lot of time and effort.
If you want to sell any of your other wonderful knives..email me.

When I got my Sebenza, it had already seen a trip to a belt sander in the form of a shallow scallop in the thumb lug area, but it seemed well done enough, and I haven't seen any sort of need to worry about warranty work, so I never really worried about it.

I don't know if smoothing some corners on a handle would have any specific effect on the physical integrity of the knife, as long as there wasn't any sort of interference with the pivot or lock areas.

Touch the blade with other than a sharpening tool of some sort, and all bets are off. I could and would completely understand warranty issues concerning "aftermarket" modifications to the blade. I would be a bit interested to see what CRK's official policy would be regarding the scales, though.

Matt:

Thank you for posting the photos of your Large Sebenza. We are always fascinated in seeing how our knives are being altered. The changes to your knife are very interesting. You obviously spent a great deal of time and effort at the grinder.
The question was raised as to how this affects the Sebenza warranty. When ANY product is sold, the warranty is based on the ORIGINAL product as it was INTENDED to be sold. Regardless as to how sensible an alteration might seem, our official policy is…Any modifications, no matter how minor, will cause the warranty to become null and void.
The modifications, however, do not go unnoticed. They are always interesting for us to see because they help to spark new ideas and designs.

Hi Mark, thanks for the official reply from CRK! I have never had a problem with any of the many Sebenzas I have owned. Most of the problems people seem to have with these knives are very small imperfections when they are new, few and far between. This is why I dont have a problem modifing my Sebenzas.I dont think I have ever sent a knife back to the manufacturer for any problem.I have had several less than perfect production knives that I always cleaned up myself. If I did damage my Sebenza and needed to send it back for a blade replacement or something of that nature I would expect, and be happy to pay for it.Also this knife is far from finished.I got the orginal idea to modify this knife when I decided that I like the old style handle better. After seeing Mad Dogs pics I made up my mind to do it.I will do it to both my large and small plain knives.Look for more pics tonight for the finished product.
DaveH you have E-mail.
Thanks!!
Matt

The work looks great, and probably doesn't effect the knife at all functionally.

The rhetoric of " modifications render the warrenty null and void" sounds politically correct, but if I know Chris and Anne , I'll bet the house they'd work on your knife in a heartbeat if you had a sharpening or warrenty issue you needed their help with.

They're not walking away from their customers or their products which is why I will buy more of their products, and support their business with my $$$$$.
