I have one of those. Mine didn't come with any instructions though. I bought it on an online auction site a few years back. I was kind of disappointed because it only offers one angle, but it works great. What did you pay for it? (if you don't mine me asking)
Don't know when it first came out. The earliest catalog the 203 appears in is the 1986, but it may have been available before that. The 204 replaced it in '98, so sometime prior to then.
I'd guess early to mid 80's (ETA: Let's say 1983 for a definite date). I have an early one in the drawer at home. It was my first Spyderco product (Dad didn't care for it when he bought it and gave it to me to use), and I learned to sharpen on it way back when.
Brought over some Goody's to my grandmums house and she gave it to me said she wasn't sure if it was complete but it looks complete to me and unused. I def. Say this kit is pre 1989...the font alone isn't anything if seen recently. I'll try to get more pics later on oh and the instructions are there pretty works great too.
Ah it's going to take some getting used to. I'm used to using my pull through sharpeners. I just started using a leather strop to polish the edge and that makes a world of a difference.
I finally found my old Spyderco sharpener!!! Turns out it is a model 202, not a 203 as I was thinking. One of the brass rods and the instructions seem to have gone missing though. I'm betting they're somewhere in one of my my tool boxes. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.
The Model 203 came in the cordura pouch with a cardboard sleeve, didn't it?
I had an original 202, but it got lost in a move some time ago. Picked up a 203 back in the 90s and have used it as my go-to sharpener for years. I've since picked up a 204 and passed my 203 on to my youngest son - the Boy Scout. I've also expanded my sharpening kit quite a bit beyond the SharpMaker over the years...
