Cleaned the shop the other day and found half dozen Knife blades that I did
about 5 or 6 years ago and never finished, thy are made from SS 440C & ATS34. Thy are all Bowie's and were made for a Purveyor ? that said he could sell all I could make but needed SS so I went to the shop and started them then found out that He was full of S!!! so much for Purveyors.
Here is the first one
440C heat treat by Mr Paul, 9" blade, 14" over all. hand rubbed finish, NS fittings Sambar Stag handle, The front of the guard is stippled.
Now I know that SS is not the material of choice for Bowie's but I can't just through them away.
It is listed in fixed blade sales. Gib

Very nice, I for one don't have that much against stainless, and looks like you pulled it off. I realy like the way you blended the gaurd and but cap, nice touch.

If they'd have had it then, they'd have used it. It would have been Ideal for the tropical climate areas that the British controlled, and I see nothing at all wrong with it today.

Years ago, I had a carbon steel knife in a hard use tropical environment situation(wet, dirt etc,non stop training), where the knife could not get constant care, and it would rust up bad.

I'll take SS any day.

BTW, nice knife!!:D

I am still trying to figure out how you detailed that gaurd and butt so well. it looks like the pieces were grown that way on the animal.

Doc

Gib, that's a beauty, and marvelously executed!

You might just find that there be a whole lot of collectors who don't "mind" a stainless Bowie at all, and actually prefer it! ;) IMO, it widens your market to do both.

Your lucky you have strings tied to other things so you can find them. Nice job! I've got an order for an ATS 34 blade myself. I have nothing against ss blades, I just don't like making one with the grinder anymore.....

That's real purty Gib. Sure would have made a nice Christmas present for a guy living in hot and humid Virginia :)

I bet that one goes quick.

Doc, It is real easy to blend the guard and pommel to the stag, I use a cutoff disk in the Fordom and carve it to match, on the guard just use a smaller disk. It is finished with a blue rubber knife edge abrasive wheel. Just be careful with the disk thy brake resulting in flying pieces. Gib

I assume you are doing this after marking the pieces in some way and removing the pretty handle material from the tang.....?

Your work is truly inspiring Gib! You make some gorgeous stuff. I am hoping in the coming year to add some of all of you guys work to my collection. I especially am interested in one of your bowies Gib....

Doc

Doc, No I finish the handle, guard & pommel after the knife is assembled 99% of the time. You learn real fast to be careful. Gib

You must have the nerves of a surgeon Gib! Yours, as well as all the others work I have seen here, is very meticulous, but that butt cap looks like it was nerve racking to get finished.

How did you attach that to the tang? Is that threaded inside, or is it soldered in place and ground flat?

Doc, I Silver braze a piece of all thread on to the tang and a threaded collar to the pommel and screw them together after filling the cavity with a good epoxy. Gib

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Oooops! Right into the stag! Yep, I imagine you gotta be real careful! Really nice work there, Gib!

Nice job Gib; I have nothing against stainless either, except I can't HT myself yet. I sure like that blade profile and I'll second Doc's happiness with matching the pommel and guard to the stag. Did you use the Dremel to stipple the face of the guard too?

Yes Dave I did. A while back I got interested in textures and was experimenting, I took a brass bar and did a 1" square stippling of a lot of different burrs. A learning experience, would recommend it to anyone wanting to try it. Gib

That's a good idea Gib, and I have been thinking about it. Did you make 1" squares for each bit/pattern, or different patterns in the same square? Not that it really matters, just wonder how much area it takes to get a good taste of the results.

I think I used a bar that was scrap it was 1" wide and did enough to get a feel for the apperience. I was practing at the same time. Gib
