Here's my latest woodmans's knife, the "Modern Nessmuk". Blade is 6" long X 1/4" thick. Fully tapered tang. The handle is Arizona Ironwood secured by 3 all brass Lovless style bots. brass pins and brass lanyard tube. The spine is fully rounded, and knife is differentially heat treated. Finish is 1500 grit polished out with a Scotchbrite pad.
Let me know what you think.

OH MY GOSH!!

So that's what you did with the modern Nessmuk???!!!??!

Absolutely gorgeous!

I didn't know you were "talented". Now I want to see other knives you've made.

Keep up the good grinds!

Wow, excellent work. That iron wood is gorgeous, wonderful grain pattern, and the blade shape really flows.

I am suprised you went with 1/4" thick steel on a Nessmuk style knife, since he was such an avid fan of the thin blade. What advantages do you see from the thicker blade, and what made you decide to go that thick? Nessmuk's knife was designed to compliment his little double bit hatchet (and thus could be thin), is your knife more of a stand alone piece?

It is a very nice Nessmuk inspired knife for sure.

I think the fully rounded spine is an excellent touch, it really increases comfort in use, and the only draw back I have seen is not being able to throw a spark with it. A worthwhile trade off as far as I am concerned, as there are lots of other things (stiker, can opener, sharp glass or rock) that throw a spark off a ferro rod, but the knife should be dedicated to cutting.

I decided to go with 1/4" so that I could chop and hack with it. I went with a tapered tang so that it would be a good front heavy chopper and still have enough control for finer work. It is more of a stand alone knife. Nessmuk probably wouldn't like it unless he left home without his axe. I wasn't worried about the rounded spine not throwing sparks because I always carry a smaller knife for that purpose, but if a customer wanted a flat spine I could sure do that as well.

This one was only the beginning. I'm looking forward to making more variations on this theme.

Peter Jensen suggested a stainless version with Micarta handles...hmmm...sounds cool to me.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Take care.

 That's really nice..... Looks great for survival.
Post more pictures as you take them please????

JP Pretty darn sweet looking blade. Should give years of service. I for one would not hesitate to take it along and use and abuse it:>
