Look out for Chumps with Axes!

I found this hilarious passage about axe safety in a book called Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties by D.C. Beard written back in 1914. I'm reading this thing all serious and then came to the "chump section." I had no idea this word was being used back then like it is today. Here it is:

XVIII- HOW TO USE AN AXE​

Dangers​

"All edged tools are dangerous when in the hands of "chumps," dangerous to themselves and to any one else who is near them. For instance, only a chump will use an axe when its head is loose and is in danger of flying off the handle; only a chump will use his best axe to cut roots or sticks lying flat on the ground where he is liable to strike stones and other objects and take the edge off the blade. Only a chump will leave an axe lying around on the ground for people to stumble over; if there is a stump handy at your camp and you are through using the axe, strike the blade into the top of the stump and leave the axe sticking there, where it will be safe from injury."

Reminds me of when I found the word "dork" being used in an old Charlie Brown comic strip.

Nice though I thought this was going to be a blurb on the incident we had locally. A guy shop lifted about 20 bucks worth of stuff and when security tried to detain him he whipped out a hatchet and cut part of the guards ear off. Then dropped the stuff he was trying to steal and left.

We had an individual try to rob a liquor store in Alaska using an axe. The store owner shot him in the leg, he was arrested, and went to prison for several years. The judge said he was being sentenced to prison for stupidity.

A couple of days ago a shop lifter cut off a security guard's ear with a hatchet he was carrying under his coat here! They sewed the ear back on but they are still hunting the attacker.

Over here in Germany we actually had a school shooting (for lack of a better term) done by a student that was armed with an axe, some knives and molotovs. He threw the lit motolovs into classrooms and then hacked at the other students as they tried to flee from the burning classrooms.
Incredibly, there was just on seriously injured girl, that took multiple hits to the head, but is fine now. Always amazes and relives me when a crazed individual uses something like an axe, sword or machete to attack people and only very rarely the victims end up dead.
But attacking your fellow students with an axe is kinda more than being a chump..

P.S.
Of course, after that, the usual suspects started to cry for more gun control. Which I kinda expected, but still left me scratching my head how mentally go from axe+molotov (molotovs being illegal already) to gun control.

I found a similar reference in the The American Boys' Handybook Of Camplore And Woodcraft by Dan Beard, 1920

"2. No one but a duffer and a chump will use another man's axe without that other man's willing permission"

so true!
