Just got yestarday from Japan, from my russian friend in Tokyo -

Random-97.jpg

This is ATS34+ZDP189+ATS34 blade blank which I will turn into two knives I think. Just so overwelmed - need to share this...

Thanks, Vassili.

As I understand they call it Warikomi, probably SanMai is just Cold steel name, but I am not sure.

Anyway it is ZDP-189 wich can be hardened to 67HRC! Probably, one knife will be 65 and another 67, just to see the difference.

Thanks, Vassili.

Please keep us posted on your heat treating efforts. I've got a piece I want to make something with soon.

How are you going to heat treat it? I heard that you have to send it to the Hitachi factory to be hardened (maybe it is some secret process?)

Precisely what I was going to ask! I doubed that it is a secret process, I bet they just don't want anybody to **** up the heat treat and give a brand new steel a bad reputation. This is why they have only very few companies that are authorized to perform a heat treat on ZDP-189. Then again it may just simply really difficult....who knows?

First time I'll send it back to my russian friend and he'll send it to same place he bought it from/ It takes 10$ and 4 days - not too much different then to send it to Paul Bos. And it require high temperature treatment which Bos is not doing.

However my friend will get HT instruction soon and will translate it in Russian so I'll be able to translate it to English. Then I try to talk to Phill Willson first (not sure - it may need high temperature for HT).

He presented it to me, just to let me experience this steel which he is very fascinated about. But price is much less then knives made out of it.

I'll send him this URL - I hope he'll join this discussion, because he knows everything and everibody there.

Thanks, Vassili.

I will be interested to hear your results. This is the same combination of steels that will be in the sprint-run Delica in the fall.

Thats way cool Vassili! And I agree with NV, take lost of pics, I love the pictorial of your handle makings!

He sad it is same as for ATS-34 (which you may expect because they are lainated together), but he ask me to ask you guys how actually in US ATS-34 is heat treated, then he may verify that this is same process.

Please, let me now what it is here (ATS-34 heat treatment).

He OK to post his e-mail if someone have any questions.

Thanks, Vassili.

Anybody?
Is this similar to ATS-34 HT?
Is it possible to make same or better here?

Thanks, Vassili.
