Look what my DSSF was hiding

For some reason I don't have much luck with the black coating Busse puts on their blades. Not a criticism of Busse but their other coatings seem to stay on better than the black in my experience. Especially on my DSSF. It started to seem like every time I took it out of the Spec-Ops sheath, another piece had flaked off. After seeing a few others that had been stripped, I decided to do the same (plus I didn't have any naked Infi). Here is a pic of what it looked like when I got it.

This is what it looks like now. I'm not the most educated when it comes to knives so I'm not sure what the black is but I like it. I was actually going to try to remove the original finish where the bare blade is and leave the black crinkle coat on the rest of it. It became tough to do with the Klean Strip so I just removed everything. Boy was I surprised when there was a black layer where I wanted to leave it. There are also a few spots of the underlying black on the handle as you can see in the pics.

I seem to recall someone saying the black is an etchant or pre-coat to prepare the steel for the final coating. Details were vague.

Looks like gun bluing to me. I was thinking about bluing a whole blade at some point. Maybe I'll experiment with the DSSF. I guess it's not a DSSF anymore. Just a DSF.

That looks really cool!
Don't you think, the dark areas are just the raw, unpolished INFI? Is the surface on the dark part rough'ish?

Looks good to me. Perhaps the darker areas is the decarb layer?? If so, keep her oiled up.

I just stripped a BATAC the other day and it also has the rough texture on flats.
It looks like the surface on the flats was not machined at all, probably just bead blasted to clean it off before coating The main grind appears to be blasted after the grinding.
I have washed the stripped knife in just about any solvent/cleaning product that I had at home and it is now a dull gray rather than black, the black washed out of the dimples.

Looks beautiful! I think the DSSF and the BATAC look the best stripped, and I've stripped a bunch of INFI. I miss my DSSF even more now.

I think from what Ive seen that is fairly typical of saber ground strippers:)

THe sabers show up and are little rough with INFI dimples.

No I don't think it's raw INFI. It looks to be a stain. In fact if you look at a couple of the pics, you can see where there are a couple of drip stains. No it isn't rough. Totally smooth. No dimples.
