Looked at some used hatchets and axes today-time to learn to hang one

I was only able to find names on a couple of them. One was a Collins single bit set up as a hatchet. The head looked to large for the handle. I remember it as being painted red.
The other was a Vulcan True Temper single bit on a busted handle. Both were rusted, but in good/very good shape and not very worn.

Both looked in the 3-3and1/2 pound range.

I don't know what the price was. But if you members think they are worth refinishing, what is the most I should offer?

I try not to spend more than $5 for an old axe head, though very nice or rare ones will fetch more than that. But it's hard to say what those two are worth without seeing them. Those are both good manufacturers and both heads are surely better than anything you'll find down at your local hardware store. Offer $5 apiece or less.

Both the Collins and the Kelly Vulcan are very nice heads. They will go from a low of $10 to a high of $30-$40+ on Ebay, plus shipping.
But start low as SP recommended..you can always go higher. Both should clean and sharpen up nicely in the condition you describe them. A new Council Tool axe will cost you $35+ and it will not be any better than the vintage heads you are looking at.

Good luck, Double Ott

Well, there were 5 axes. 4 needed new handles. Someone bought all 5 for $90. The Collins was painted blue, and the Vulcan didn't have Kelly stamped on it. There was a double bit that had some writing on it that I couldn't read. It had at least an inch sharpened off of each side. Apparently I missed something.

However, I did pick up a True Temper Tomahawk hatchet in very good condition off of CL for $10. This is a nice lightweight hatchet that splits kindling very well. The seller said it was from 1960. And I think it has a forged head.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll keep my eyes open until I find a good ax that needs to be hung.

Nothing wrong with looking on ebay, but I've found really nice axes at local rummage sales and flea markets. You might want to check online to see if there are any of those types of summer events in your area. You might find some excellent axe heads worth cleaning up and hanging for dirt cheap.
I found 3 yesterday and paid $10 for a Collins Legitimus, $1 for a Kelly hatchet and $2 for a Firestone boys axe head. It also allows you to see the head in person which is a little better than looking at something online.
