well....

i've decided to purchase a new knife... heres what im looking for:

-fixed blade (sheath doesnt really matter. kydex preferred)

-rust resistant (must be able to handle heavy salt water abuse)

-good quality steel (hold edge well and is very strong)

-can chop as well as be used as a pull knife (detailed work as well as brute work)

-dependable (will be one of my main knives which i will be taking into the woods)

-no serations (i prefer straight edge blades)

..................

budget is 200 dollars canadian

i live in british columbia so local dealers would be preferred... im not too keen on internet shopping but... yeah... i prefer picking up my knives first hand =)

thanks in advance

the salt water resistance really narrows it to a handful of knives, and they will not necessarily fill the rest of your criteria.

If you take that out , there are a plethora of great knives.

Also, what blade length?

also, don't underestimate your sheath. sheath DOES matter, cause your fixed blade can really only be good if it's carried properly. you're looking for a sheath that fits snugly but isn't too grabby, one that is easily to carry such that you *habitually* learn to carry it (don't get lazy and leave it at home--the one time you really need a knife is when you don't have it). get one that is concealable but easily accessed: one that you can hide from sheeple have have in your hand at a moments notice. and of course durable, waterproof, etc etc.

and with that said, i think the ontario rat 5 looks mighty sexy.

dunno how it'll fly on rust resistance, but it's got a coated blade, so it'll be rust resistant for a little while...

Check out the new M6 from Swamp Rat- should be available soon, just came out at blade.

Or the Scrap Yard knives, also should be available soon. (cheaper)

Coated as well, but like the Rat above, the edge will rust.

thanks for your responses guys =)

the reason im lookin for a heavy salt water resistant knife is because i love to travel along coast lines

the swamp rat looks mighty sexy if i might add =)

i think i'll try out the rat 5...

looks like the knife i need...

just wondering if u guys knew anywhere in bc (lower mainland) in which i could pick that baby up

also.. its been a habit that i give the edge a quick sharpen at the end of each day after use =) so edge rust is not too big of a factor... also i keep a little bit of oil to help coat the knife after sharpening =)

so thanks again for your input

i think the rat-7 looks like what im lookin for =) never tried this brand of knives so it'll be a good learning experience...

anyone have any info on the rat series? specifically the rat 7???

thanks again

I would suggest ordering online from a reputable dealer. You will find much better prices than you will at a store.

was also interested in the ranger rd 9?? any of ya fellas had any personal experience with em??

what'd u like?? dislikes???

experiences, scenarios =)

thanks a bunch

There is Ranger knives forum on knifeforums.com
Ranger knives are great, but can't do this:
-rust resistant (must be able to handle heavy salt water abuse)
as well as Ontario RAT, Swamp rat or Ka-Bar because they are made from low alloy carbon steels. Rust resistance and toughness go against each other too.

Salt water is very aggresive and can make even "stainless" steels rust.
H1 steel is considered to be very rust resistant, so you can ask Justin (rangerknives.com) to make a knife from it if you insist on salt water resistance.

But if you mean use in this condition:
the reason im lookin for a heavy salt water resistant knife is because i love to travel along coast lines
then you don't need to worry too much about rust resistance. If properly cared after use. :)

haha thanks for your response huugh

thats what i was thinking too... if i just care for her well i think she'll be ok =)

so it looks like im going to have to settle between the ontario rat-7 or the ranger knives rd-9

since i already have a ka-bar =)

i was talking to an ex-navy officer and he said that hes seen a couple guys carrying the sog seal pups which are suppose to be around what im lookin for... so i was thinking

might as well save up and buy all three knives =)

the rat-7 the rd-9 as well as the seal pup elite...

then i can try em all out together and write a nice post!

haha thanks for the replies
