Alright..

Here's the deal.

I'm looking for a Hawk somewhat like the ones made by Cold Steel and the movie "The Patriot".

Basically a Hawk with a distinct hammer rear.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Will Barber at HB Forge will make you pretty much anything you want for not much money. He made me a Viking bearded ax with a hammer poll. If you draw him a picture he can make what you want. Also the hawk in "The patriot" doesn't have a hammer poll, it is actually a pipe bowl for smoking tobacco. That is what is referred to as a "Pipe hawk" (astoundingly cryptic back then weren't they). They were made by the thousands in France and England and used as trade goods by the early settlers and frontiersman. Will also has some unfinished pipe hawk heads if your feeling a little adventurous.
What you might want to do is see if you can get one of his spiked hawks in squaw size then just cut the spike off and shape it into a hammer poll yourself. Dremel tool or hacksaw and a file should do it. Will stands behind everything he makes too.
The Patriot hawk has a curly maple handle. Straight grain hickory is stronger, cheaper, but doesn't look nearly as nice. If you are going to really use it I advise hickory, if it is just going to be something cool to own then upgrade to the curly maple.

Good advice and observations. If you decide that you want a hammer poll, check out Two Hawks' Longhunter. www.2hawks.net His work is a bit more expensive than H & B ( www.hbforge.com ), but he devotes a lot of attention to detail.

If it didn't sell at the Las Vegas show, Gil Hibben had a nice handcrafted pipe hawk that I almost bought. It would be a great display piece and probably have some collector value.

Hi Phil
If you don't mind looking abroad have alook at Joe Zemitis's work. The hawk below he called "the Patroit" all the details can befound on his site, just follow the links .http://www.unitedbladeworx.com.au
