Looking at a couple of the knives...

Hey there, so I was pointed over here due to the rather high reputation of RAT cutlery stuff, so I figured I'd check it out. After taking a look at some of the knives, they look pretty nice indeed. I like the high carbon steel choice and the wonderful designs thus far. I just wanted some people's opinions on the choices.

The RC-6 was the first I took a look at, and it seemed like a solid choice. However, the RC-5, which looks like it's coming out this month, is slightly shorter and has an angled grind that looks like it'd fit my needs perfectly. I was wondering if anyone had an idea of the price for the RC-5 when it is released. Also, I was wondering about the sharpening difficulties for the epoxy, though I'm probably going to go with the standard blade anyway as it's primary use won't be for hunting or military.

The other knife I was considering was the H.E.S.T., as it would be an ideal place to store the cordage I make or take out in the wilderness. However, I'm a little worried about its potential strength, and wanted some thoughts on that.

Overall, really good looking knives though.

on Strength....

I don't think there will be an issue. 1095 is tough stuff and with the RAT heat treat, it is even better.

RAT will warranty the knife against anything, but I always tell my customers to use a tool like it was meant to be used and you won't have a problem. There shouldn't be any problem breaking this kinfe if you are using it. If you TRY to break it, you will. If you use it, you won't.

I have an RC5 on pre order from ridgeknifeshop.com at this point, the price is 129.95 plus shipping. I have an RC6 and it is an excellent knife and would easily meet al the needs in a survivla situation from a medium sized knife point of view. I also have an RC4 which has become my edc blade due to it's handy size and excellent sheath system.

The strength of the H.E.S.T. and such skeletonized small knives will surprise you. Just use them as they are intended to be used and not as a pry bar.

From my experience with RAT cutlery products you cant go wrong. They honestly do stand 100% behind their guarantee which is truly the best you will find bar none. Great guys and great products.

Welcome..... RAT Cutlery; Made in the USA and Lifetime Warranty.... so really hard to go wrong with any RC product you purchase IMO !

Tell us what your needs are. What are you buying this knife for? That will help us (at least me) recommend one.

Ill be using my knife for a fair deal of batoning, carving and whittling; rope cutting, some skinning and cutting, and ideally I'd like to use it for light foot and hand support on tree climbs. It rains a lot here. I do a bit of adventuring as well...old tunnels and the like, so wire cutting might be useful as well.

I've found the RC-4 to be a great all around field knife.

I think it would handle any and all the tasks you specify aside from cutting wire. Not that it couldn't do it, just that I would carry a specific tool for that job and save my knife's edge.

For your use the RC-4 or RC-5 would be fine. I love the design of the RC-5 - the thickness and weight. If it were the same thickness as the RC-4 I would hae already ordered 2

yes.. remember that the RC5 is 1/4 thick. If you want something lighter.. go with the RC6. Less thick blade might to better for whittling too.
