Looking at buying a knife

I'm considering the Smith & Wesson® Extreme Ops™ Drop Point Linerlock with Aluminum Handle and G-10 Inserts

Basically, I need a folder that will keep a decent edge with gentle use, and costs less than $25. I figured this would cover it. Your thoughts? I'd be willing to entertain the idea of maybe going a bit more expensive if it would be a major difference in quality, but certianly nothing over 35.

EDIT: I'd prefer a straight edge, because I'm lazy, and don't care to take the time to sharpen a serrated edge, and I already have a serrated spyderco delica for rope, belts, etc.

There are many good folders under the $30 mark. Take a look at the Buck Hilo, Mantis, Pilot, the Benchmade Monocrome or Pika, the Spyderco Byrd line, the Camillus Heat or EDC, the Ka-Bar Mule or some CRKT or Kershaw models. They are all much better than any knife from Smith & Wesson.

The Ka-Bar Dozier is good value too, in your price range.
I recently heard that knifecenter.com has the CRKT Crawford Falcon on sale, also in your price range, under 25 bucks. Good value there as well.

And I'll say it too - please don't buy a Smith and Wesson knife.

Could somebody tell me what is wrong with smith and wesson? I understand that they aren't popular, but why?

Because they're generally cheaply made Chinese models that are marked up way too much because they have the "Smith&Wesson" name on it...
Plus you could probably get one of those turds on eBay for about 2-3 bucks a pop... maybe 5 at most.

not to really hammer smith and wesson but you can get a much better knife for about the same price. all those mentioned above are good examples especially the dozier folders. kershaw makes several knives in your range and I also like crkt but be careful what steel is in the blade, stay away from the 420s knives. as always get what you want BUT when 20 people tell you the milks sour do you really want to taste it?? later, ahgar

One more recommendation for the Dozier folding hunter for $20. It's a great knife all around, and phenomenal for the price. Nice steel, great fit and finish, and nice ergos. You really can't go wrong with it. It would also make a great complement to your serrated delica.

Let's put it this way: Smith & Wesson; known for their firearms, not for their knives. Would you buy a gun from a company that traditionally made knives?

That's not to say that I'm not guilty of that "crime" though....

Get a benchmade griptillian, there not too expensive and you get a wonderful all around utility folder.

I'd encourage you to look into the Byrd line of knives. I bought a Crossbill and have been very impressed with it. The fit and finish is good. It did take a little breaking in to get it open smooth, but for twenty buck you can't beat it.

S&W knives really aren't that bad, but there are just so many better knives at the same pricepoint.

For 20-30 bucks, I recommend the Buck Mayo Cutback and Buck Mayo Hilo (same knife, the Hilo is just larger) above all others, though any of the mentioned knives in this thread (even the S&W) will do just fine.

I prefer the Cutback and Hilo because the design is, IMO, more interesting and in-line with what you would find in a 300-800 dollar knife. I consider all of the other 20-30 dollar knives, even the similar framelocks like the Monochrome and Vapor, to be a bit boring compared to the Mayos.

I also find the quality to be just as good as anything at the same price.

If you could spend about 10 bucks more, getting another Delica (a plain edge version this time) would probably be your best bet.

Actually, I'd no longer buy a GUN from S&W....

If you're looking for an affordable knife, don't forget to check out the trade forums.
You might have something that another forum member wants and you can get some terrific trade deals.

Good luck,
Allen.

That certainly sounds appealing, but all I could trade would be my delica, or perhaps some crappy kitchen knives. :)

Get a Byrd or the Hilo. But if you get a Byrd, don't get one with the black coating. It wears off really fast.

OK, I ended up getting this brand new on eBay for 17.25. I understand it is just a smaller version of the hilo.
