Looking at Kiln Options. Including the use of my existing PID possibly.

So,

I am thinking of getting a Kiln with my tax return.
The question is, do I get a fully programmable 24" kiln with ramp/soak times?

Or, do I get a 24" standard kiln and use my Auberin PID http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=4 to replace the stock controller. This PID is the Ramp/Soak model....

The PID is for my forge build that I plan to complete this week. I bought extra connectors to allow me to connect to different thermocouples.

Is there a reliability difference between the factory controllers from Paragon or Evenheat and an Auberin PID? Or even a simplicity in programming?

I have no experience with either to draw from until I get my forge done this week and then it will be with the PID only. I have it mounted in a project box with heat sinks and an SSR.

Thanks for the help guys.

I will preface this with "I don't know". However, when I spoke to the folks @ Auberins they told me their unit only stored 1 program. If you want to do multliple steels this could be a deciding factor.

I see what you're saying. I only work with 1080/1084 currently, but eventually will work other steels into the mix.
Multiple programs possible would be preferred.
I'd rather not have to reprogram it for every steel I use.

Brian,
If your looking to purchase one, I highly reccomend Paragon. I have the 14" at home. I use the heat treat equip at the tool and die shop for larger blades. We have a Paragon there that will do 32". The Paragon is super easy to program, and alter during the process if needed. You can store more programs than you will ever need. I know another maker who has an Evenheat, overall he was happy, had some problems with the door not sealing well.

Brian, actually goes beyond entering recipes, the controller will have to retune itself also. Hope that helps.
