I find myself in a position I'm sure a few of you have been in before; Randall cataloge in hand, model and options picked out, and many dreams floating around in your head.
Then, the scariest of all things can be read on the rear of the current cataloge: Present Shipping Date: June, 2006.
wow.
I've always wanted a Randall knife (A 7-1/2" Model 18) for as long as I can remember. It stands as though the 'Holy Grail' of custom knives for many collectors and users alike. The total cost of membership; a $20 deposit, and a lot of patience.
wow.
I see the Model 18 show up now and again on Ebay, usually marked up at the lowest, $100 over cost, and at the highest, $400. But, if you want it, and want it now, the prices are justified IMO. I've thought over going after auctions like that...even had the credit-card in hand...and then I think to myself; 'Could I Wait? '
So, here I am, order sheet in hand, cataloge sitting on the desk...contemplating that same question.
Here's my question for all of you owners out there, who have gone the distance, and made that commitment: How did you do it? 3 years is a long time to wait for something. So much can happen in that time. For myself, in the last 3 years, I've gotten divorced, remarried, moved to another country, and become a permanent resident there. Hell, that's only in the last 2 years!
I guess my main concern about embarking on this mission, is whether or not I'll be there when it's all said and done. If I move, die, or am kidnapped by aliens, what ever will become of my knife? I know, all a bit silly...but silly things happen in your mind, when you contemplate making a 3-year commitment like that. My first wife didn't even get that!
Share with me some of your thoughts, opinions, and advice on this. I'd love to hear about some of the trials and tribulations you've all gone through in pursuit of a 'Randall made Knife'.
