Or less. I have a few Cold Steel swords but I realize that they are not that great. I want to purchase my first japanese styled blade, being mostly a katana but a wakizashi or nodachi if i have to. I was looking at the hanwei practical katana pro or elite or maybe a imperial cold steel but i want some recomendations. Any katana under 300 is what im looking for. I am going to use this for medium to heavy cutting tasks. i.e. bamboo, thick tatami. i plan on acually using this everyday but also i want something that would look good behind glass. so a good looking user katana for under 300 if thats even possible. Hand forged would be a great thing.

musashiswords.com has some nice pieces for the money. I've got two and they both work and function well. For $100 you get real same skin, double pinned, and 1045 steel. Alternatively, you can take a look at the 'built your own' over at sword buyers guide. For $300 you get to choose your tsuba, wrappings, colors, length, etc. On top of that, it's differentially heat treated T10 steel so you get a real hamon....nice stuff.

Here's my Musashi. I paid $78 w/shipping. It has real hamon, hand forged 1060 steel and real same. It isn't the fanciest katana but the fittings are tight and I like it quite a bit. I really wanted a CS Warrior Katana but I coudn't help but to think that they are over priced for what they are(although I do like CS products).

I think Cheness has pretty good bang for your buck. Even their folded steel katana is well under $300.

I have alot of high dollar swords and just recently picked up some hard users

One is the Raptor series by Paul Chen . They where designed by James Williams and although this is not a traditional blade it is very forgiveing and cuts well . They can be had in the mid 2 hundred dollar range on ebay

I picked up 2 Cheness SGC's one Ko Katana and the regular 28 inch version . I have not cut with these yet but although plain seem to be built pretty well for the money. These can be had for under 300 from there web site

If I had to pick one I would go with the raptor series blades.

$388 plus shipping for micarta handle and $419 plus shipping for G-10. Some colors are available now without waiting........if you hurry!

I do not think so . I have a few of both .. Hanwei has much nicer fittings.

I think both Cheness and Hanwei are fairly equal in durability within the same price category. Cheness does use cheaper fittings in order to cut costs which isn't bad if you want a user/practice cutting sword.

Hanwei also has a large range of higher end pieces that Cheness does not offer.

I think the Tenchi series from Cheness is very worthy for the price. I like the full tang construction of the Cheness models.

Don't forget to check out the offering from Dynasty Forge. They offer some super blades!
