I'm finally going to come off the hip for a heavy duty knife. A 7-8" chopper knife some thing like a Ranger RD7, Cold Steel Recon Scout, Fallkniven A2, Swamp Rat Camp Tramp.

Does Swamp Rat still make them?

I was about to go for the Ranger RD7, but they sold to Ontario. I may still wait and see what they come up with.

Than you have Kabar Becker stuff coming out soon.

Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Chopweilers are around, though none are in the store. Great chopper. So is the RD7. You should be able to find one of those. I wouldn't worry about the Ontario ownership. They will still be the same.

Hopefully the Busse Sarsquatch will be out soon....should make a great compact chopper. Ranger RD7 would be good so would a Fehrman. Really it comes down to price and then deciding what you should be looking at.

I'd say for a cheaper knife, for what you need it for, Might be alittle big but, get the Browning Crowell/Barker competition knife. It's an awesome chopper, slicer/ stabber too., Nice Micatra scales, full tang, nice leather sheath, Tough cabon steel blade, and a convex edge. I've chopped down small trees with it and it would still shave arm hair right after. And it's Mighty purdy, if you like that style

I got to use my chopweiler again just recently. It's a dream! I had thought about getting a Busse FBM or FBMLE but I just cant imagine it could be 2 or 3 better than the Swamp Rat. But still I think about it...

Get a Kershaw Outcast. You won't be disappointed and you'll save a bunch of money.

Browning Crowell/Barker is prettier, And Micarta handles and leather sheath, Tough carbon steel+nICE CONVEX Edge that doesn't chip and easy to resharpen, even after heavy work, But TEAGUE is Right-on about the Kershaw outkast, Super tough Chopper, Nice Kydex sheath and D2 blade.Probably find it for anywhere between $40-$70, I have one and my only complaint it there isn't much of a point. You couldn't too easily stab a wild animal with it, but you could sure chop it up. the kershaw is kinda like a machete. I have a Becker BK9 Mint, never cut anything, And an Extra Browning that hasn't seen anything, That are collecting dust, That I don't really need;-)
