Looking for a short sword/big knife. Double edge, primary as a thruster but also w/ some hacking ability though I subscribe to a thrust driven method. Doubled edged for sure. Looking for something w/ a little more mass than a machete but still lively in the hand.
Purpose: an ideal one handed non-firearm home defense weapon. Not something for concealed carry out & about obviously.
I like the gladius concept. Nice acute point, broad blade makes a gaping wide wound when penetrating & has a little heft so it can do some chopping but still lively & well balanced. I also like straight edges that are very easy to maintain. Strongly preferring a symmetrical double edge. I feel that traditional gladius are a little long though for very CQB. The were probably a good length for fighting w/ the big roman shield, but I am thinking a blade of 12-16" is ideal here.
Would want it to be less than 2' OAL so one could combat (under hand toss) throw.
I found the Gage Custom "tactical gladius" but it is a little pricy.
I am looking for something less than 300. Could be modern style handle or historic type as long as the blade can take an edge & can take some abuse w/o shattering.
Here is one I like at Kris Cutlery but it is too long. I like the nice straight edges.
EDIT to OP to include Pics of some things I eventually found along these lines for benefit of someone in the future. All of these have carbon spring steel blades, no SS. You can right click pics to get the image address to lookup them up if you like. These are all Windless Steelcraft spring steel blades from either atlanta cutlery or museum replicas. many of these require $10 or $15 more for factory sharpening.
