I need to find a knife for a gentleman who has had partial loss of the use of his left hand. He has always carried a Barlow electricians knife with a locking screwdriver/scraper blade. I believe that he may be able to open a Spyderco type blade, but am concerned that he would not be able to undo a lock back. Could anyone suggest an easy opening and closing knife that would appeal to an "old school" tradesman? Thanks, Woody

I don't think you're going to find a 2 blade knife that can be opened/unlocked with one hand that looks like an old style pocket knife. Certainly not one with the screwdriver electrician's blade. Your best bet is to find a modern knife (aka "tactical" ) with a traditional look; with wood or bone scaled handles. If you poke around A.G. Russell's website you can find a lot of examples of such knives. I don't know exactly how much your friend can manipulate things, but most modern knives can be closed with one hand - even Spyderco back-locks if you know how.

FYI, there's a federal exemption for people with the use of only one hand to carry an automatic (switchblade) knife regardless of state of residence. Your friend might qualify.

spyderco paramilitary 2 works for one handed use and the lock on the back is strong as anything AND can be closed one handed.
Its is more modern than an electrician's knife but it's very durable and a good knife

What about a Case Trapperlock? Looks traditional but has a locking blade and is one handed opening. Made in the USA.

Spyderco UKPK -- no lock, but a very strong spring so it doesn't close on you easily when in use.
