Looking for a backpocket knife

I’m looking for a back pocket knife. Preferably with the following.. single locking blade 3.25” long, 1095, with lanyard hole and around 4.375” closed with a slender profile. The Queen mountain man is close but on the large side (4.63”). The GEC #72 lock back looks real nice but is on the short side (3.75”), would sit too low in the pocket for easy removal. The cheetah design is close but I don’t want a Case. I know Queen makes this design but basically I’m not sure about the swing guards. The knife I’m looking for would be similar in size to an Opinel #8. I have an Opinel #8; just want something a little more robust. Any suggestions???

Hmm. That's an interesting request. I don't think there are any American-made knives currently being made in that configuration. The Queen/ Moore Maker mountain man might be the closest, but you've noted that is slightly larger than what you're looking for.

Eye Brand and Boker both make lockbacks sorta in that size range. Not with lanyard holes though. The lanyard hole makes it tough. Pretty much the only patterns you see lanyard holes on nowadays are the mountain man, or Case's new Backpocket, which is bigger than what you're looking for, and doesn't lock.

And you don't want a Case? Egads! Does not compute!

You may have to go the vintage or custom route for such a beast. Sounds like a nice setup if you can find it though.

It's not that I wouldn't want a Case, it's just that I want something in 1095. If Case had something like what I'm looking for I would definitely be interested. Sorry for the confusion.

Look for a liner locking GEC Pioneer. It is 4.5 inches, that is 1/8 in bigger then you are looking for

I believe Case is producing a Back Pocket knife designed by T. Bose. Saw an ad for it in the newest BLADE on the front inside cover.

Henckels made/ makes a lockback that looks to be in your size range, locks, and has a lanyard hole. Closed length is 4 1/8"

I'm not sure what the blade length is though. My guess would be around 3 1/2"? This may be a bit beefier than what you're looking for.

Case's CV steel is basically 1095, you might be able to find a full-size copperlock in CV if you dig around enough. The copperlock doesn't have a lanyard hole though.

Bulldog made some 4 1/8" swinguards in carbon.

I'll take look at these. I don't think they have a laynard hole but sometimes you can't have anything.

That Henckels is a big old thing though - you'd need a belt, braces, another belt and some extra braces to stop your jeans :D

GEC do the #23 in slipjoint and liner lock versions - the bareheads are light enough to carry backpocket- but have spey bellied blades (the SARPNT and the Beavertail, for instance)

A large sodbuster (Moore maker is good for $50) but there's Boker sodbusters too and German Eye ones - the Case large is good as well

If you can find one, the Queen Burke Daddy Barlow is great - D2/bone about $100 - there's still a few on the various sites

I don't know why, but the Bose Case backpocket doesn't do it for me - blade seems too skinnified - but I haven't ever handled one

Thanks moon I wasn't aware that CV is basically 1095. I'll explore what Case to offer.

Schrade USA had a 4" folding hunter
for just a few years that has a lanyard hole.
123OT should be carbon blade, 124Uh & SC524 stainless.

One back pocket knife I like is the Schrade USA SW7 Switch-it.
Stainless and reversible clip instead of lanyard but it is lightweight,
quickly deployed and one hand opening. Usually can find them fairly cheap.
I know one online site has a few left at $7.95.
Most on eekBay go for about $15-25 shipped.
SW7S half serrated, SW7FE plain edge but I haven't ever seen an FE.

Let's please try to limit discussion to "traditional" knives as appropriate to this sub-forum. (This way we can avoid getting a plethora of suggestions with pocket clips, thumb studs, half serrated blades and other features which are better discussed in other areas of the site.)

Thanks.

My pleasure, sir! There was an interesting thread just yesterday on that very topic in the General forum. As usual, when it comes to steel, all sorts of characters get involved with nitpicking. The basic gist is that, for all intents and purposes, Case's CV IS 1095.

All the best,

Böker's 4"+ carbon lockback is a very nice affair, good bone handles, decent fit and lockup. No lanyard hole though.
