Looking for a bit of advice on blade.

Well, I've finally began dabbling in the whole knife-making thing, and it's fun, although I have begun to really, really appreciate the need for power tools after spending hours filing in the bevels.

I'm working on a small EDC fixed blade for myself, out of a file. This imposes some limitations on what I can make, because the file is slightly under an inch wide, and around 4 mm thick (5/32").

Anyways, I almost have the bevels completed, and am looking at the handle. The knife OA length will be under 7". My problem is this: because the file itself is so thick, and because I want this to be a small portable blade, I'm worried that just slapping scales onto it will result in a knife handle that's way too thick. So I was thinking about filing down the tang and creating recesses (similar to an integral) and adding scales, or filing down the tang and making a mortise joint to add a handle. The second one is going to be a lot more difficult for me, though, because I have really limited access to tools.

What should I do?

Thick steel usually requires a tapered tang. It allows the scales to be thick at the ends but thin at the fronts. Makes for a lighter more balanced knife too. Most quality full tang knives have tapered tangs.
