Looking for a box stitch tutorial

Hopefully someone here knows where one is. I am making a revolver ammo pouch for a duty rig for a friend and need to do what i believe is called a box stitch on the bottom to attach a flat piece to the rounded part. Meaning the pieces are at 90 degrees to each other. From what i read, the holes go straight through on one piece and go 45 degrees through the other piece, coming half way out the leather? Does that sound right? And if so, what is the best way to punch those angled holes? Couldnt find any tutorials anywhere.

Thanks

There is no good way to do that type of stitch, its always difficult, I've done it a few times and every time it was a pain. :p

Look up Al Stohlman, he has a book and more than a few tutorials on how to stitch that very type. He has a book out on types of hand stitching, I'll look and see if that one is in my book.

He uses an Awl, sometimes a curved awl. Its not an exact science, but it looks so nice when it works out.

Be back when I find that article. :)

Didn't find my book, but the one you want is "The Art of Hand Sewing Leather" by Al Stohlman.

Also in a few of his holster patterns he gives a step by step on cap stitching for the barrel end of the holster. Its the same thing.

Hope this helps a little,
