Looking for a certain bladesmith...vague info though

Ok, I'm going to try my best at explaining who I'm looking for  Long ago, at least 10-12 years ago, there was a guy that advertised in Blade magazine as a bladesmith. He was also featured in several articles on his creations. He was best known for his Japanese style designs, specifically tanto's, katana's and wakizashi's (he did other stuff as I recall though). As I recall he was in his 50's, had white hair, as lived somewhere out west/mid-west. It drives me crazy as I can actually picture his face in my head. He also had a signature mark that he put on every blade, I believe it was a kanji, "ha" for blade. I contacted him about a knife design I had via a letter, and he did in fact contact me back, and I believe we talked on the phone once or twice. One thing led to another and nothing ever came of it. About a month ago, I came across my old drawings and templates of said knife. I cannot for the life of me find the letter from him, or any other records of his name or address. I went out to a few different book stores and looked through every knife related publication I could find, page by page, to try and find him. IT'S KILLING ME! I know the info I've laid out is pretty vague, but I'm hoping that any old timers here might recognize something. This wasn't a gentleman that was around for a year or two as I recall...he was quite well known and well respected from what I remember. Where I'm going with this is I'd love to contact him again if he's still around and talk about finally making this knife. Any help at all would be great. Thanks!

Phil Hartsfield makes knives and swords by stock removal. The common definition, at least, of a bladesmith is one who forges.

His mark is not actual Chinese characters, but a stylized version of his initials: PH.

Thanks all for your replies. Yes, once Howie revealed my mystery character, I did quite a bit of research and there are obviously 3 facts in play about Mr. Hartsfield:

1. People have some extreme opinions on him in either direction
2. His prices are a bit higher than expected
3. His wait times are a bit longer than expected

All that said, I still love his work. However, I will start looking for quite a few different designers/smiths/whatever the hell you want to call them to see who else is out there for my creation. Obviously times have changed and the Internet makes things a bit easier to do research on such a thing than 12 years ago... :)

Phil sure likes A2.
His prices are so high, because he can get it.
His swords do not look conventional, so some are put off by them.
His swords are users that really work.
I've got none from Phil, but I do have a Slobodian tanto, and an Engnath katana and tanto, and I really would like to have one Howard Clarks.

Hey BUTCHER BLOCK. It's Michael Bell from Oregon. He's still making Japanese blades. Pretty amazing workmanship. Have a great weekend guys.:D
