I need a big knife that'll chop down a decent-sized tree if need be. Budget is $100. Suggestions?

Himalayan Imports khukuri. Go over the the manufacturers area, find that listing. Look for deals of the day. Get one. It will only be your first.

Go to the Himalayan Imports forum in the Manufacturers section of this website! :D

Khukuris are GREAT choppers! I got a $20 Khuk at a gun show and used it to de-branch 6 good sized cedars after I chainsawed 'em flat. Got a minor palm blister but no sore muscles. I prefer it to an ax now.

*slaps forehead*

So obvious, yet it never occurred to me. I was even reading some of the Gurkha history articles on the HI website the other day... jeez.

Thanks, guys.

Ok, so now that I know a khukuri is what I'm after, I'm going to pose another question: Are there any "tactical" versions out there that don't suck? (*cough* Cold Steel) I don't like wood or bone handles, so while I'm sure that HI's offerings are great products, they're not precisely what I'm after.

So, any good khukuris with synthetic handles and 'modern' sheaths?

Ontario makes one, so does Kabar, I think. Also, check out knifeware.com. They have one too, or they used to. The HI's are the best for the money though. The Cold Steel is not bad, except for the Kraton handle. You could always rehandle one in Micarta or something.

Silly question but why not use an axe? I'm not saying big knives are bad, but axes are better for this sort of heavy utility/tree felling. They're also much cheaper...

I should have been clearer in my request, I suppose... What I'm after is a big fixed blade which can handle heavy woods duty. I already have a couple axes, and certainly if I were going to be splitting a winter's store of firewood, I'd use them. In this case, what I'm looking for is a knife that can be used for shelter-building and the like, not an exclusive chopping tool.

Kukris are more fun than axes, mine bind less, and they present a lot more chopping edge than many axes. And it's a lot harder to miss with a big curved blade than with a small axe head :D
