Looking for a classic looking knife for a gift

I'll be leaving for Army basic training on Jan. 3rd so this Christmas is my last as a civilian and the last time I'll be living at home. I wanted to give something special to my family, and more specifically, pertaining to this forum, I wanted to dive something special to my dad. I figured knives are timeless, not at all like giving him, say, a DVD player or something like that.:)

With that being said, I want something with traditional class (ie, wooden handles, not synthetic) and under $100.

I was looking at the Buck Alpha pictured here but am not sure if I like the idea of a liner lock. I'm sure the durability is great in this Buck, I just don't think I like the way a liner lock works in general. So I looked at lockbacks....the Buck 110 stood out but you see those EVERYwhere....I want something unique.

Any ideas are appreciated:)

You might have a look at the Kershaw Wild Turkey.
I am getting one of these in trade and am going to buy a differrent one as well. The are a very nice looking knife.
I will try to post a picture from a site for you.

Even their (relatively) cheap Evo series would be nice.

But, a Lancet in any finish would be a long lasting gift.

There's probably nothing more classic than a Buck 110, others may be equal (ka-bar) but I don't think the 110 can be surpassed as far as being a classic. If you don't want a plain Jane model go to Pete's shop and get a custom.

Old-timers love Buck knives.

I gave my Dad his first Buck 110. He used to carry a 501 for years. To make it special, I engraved 4 generations of initials on it. My grandfather's, my dad's, mine, and my son's. We're all first-born sons and we all carry the name Daniel somewhere in there.

Instead of just being a knife, it is now an heirloom he will treasure every time he uses it.

I opted out of going through Pete's Custom Knife Shop, only because my Dad is a plain and simple kinda guy. I would recommend it, though, if you got the cash. Just find out (in a sneaky way) what your Dad would like and order a custom one.

Excellent:):)

Thanks for all the replies...will be checking out all options.

Take a look at the new Spyderco Kiwi. It is not your "run-of-the-mill Spyderco", if there is such a thing as a "run-of-the-mill Spyderco". It has a 2" Wharncliffe blade of VG-10 and brushed stainless scales with jigged bone inserts, as on classic pocket knives. In keeping with its classic design, it does not have a pocket clip. Try these sites for pictures and prices:

Another vote here for AG Russell, if you can't find the perfect knife for your Dad there, you just ain't looking hard enough.

I agree that A.G. Russell's is a good place to look for a "classic knife". While you are looking at A.G.'s stuff I would recommend that you check out his lines of Queen and Schatt&Morgan pocket knives. Nothing is more "classic" than a slip-joint folder and Queen's are some of the best in terms of choices of patterns, materials, and fit and finish. Schatt&Morgan knives are Queen's collectors' line.

Check out www.deltaz-knives.com
