Looking For A Custom Made Knife - No Idea Where To Turn

Hi Everyone!

Well, the desire to have my own custom made knife has completely taken hold of me. After seeing some of the custom beauties on here and other forums, I've decided to drop some coin on a late Christmas present to myself and have a knife made. Honestly, I just have no idea where to even start looking. I do have some ideas and general specs in mind, but don't know who would be able to create one for me.

Overall Length: ~12 Inches or so
Blade Length: >/= 6 or 7 inches
Blade Thickness: 3/16ths or 1/4 inch
Steel: Nothing fancy. 1095 works wonderfully
Handle: I tend to like smooth handles with some palm swell to them.
Extras: A Choil. I love a big, open choil so I can choke up on the knife when it comes to the intricate tasks at hand.

I'm basically looking for a sturdy camp knife that can be used in other situations if the need arises. I do use my knives. I don't abuse, them, but they get a hefty work out from extending backpacking and hiking. A friend of mine just had a Dark Timber Honey Badger delivered and I instantly fell in love with it. It is everything I could ever want in a knife. I especially love the rough fire scale/hammer forge marks that are left on them. Gives it a bit of character and uniqueness. Unfortunately, DTK won't be taking any orders for quite some time.

My apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum for this. I've been looking through so many threads here and getting more and more jealous by the minute, haha.

Thank you for taking some time to look and Happy New Year, everyone! :D

Edit: I should probably also add that I'm not necessarily looking for something exactly like that Honey Badger or mainly anything in particular. I'm really open to anything. Knives are great functional art. I do like rough hammer forged marks as well. As long as the overall blade length is met, the handle ergonomics are great, and there's a nice choil - I'm a happy guy. :D

just so happens that Nathan Carothers will have something in a similar vein available fairly soon, probably within the price range of the knife you posted a link to....

speaking of which, I removed the link. It goes to a non supporting dealer and that's not kosher here.

My mistake with the link. Sorry about that.

Actually, I was just looking at Nathan's work on this forum and his is absolutely amazing as well. Sadly, doesn't look he is taking orders for awhile either.

Ah well. That's what makes this hobby so much fun. Having to search and wait for that "perfect knife." Makes it so much more special when you finally get it in your hands.

I just found out that Ryan Weeks is opening his book up for a bit, and he makes a helluva knife, so you might want to drop him a line. Tell him I sent ya!

Check out these BF makers. You cannot go wrong with any of them. Good luck with your search.:)

T.K. Steingass
Phillip Patton
Bill Siegle
Ben Tendick

Great makers here on the forums, check their work out. One I have been very fond is the period work of Matt Lesniewski of ML knives.

Thank you for all the help and replies everyone! I will definitely be contacting a few of you and keeping my eyes on the KnifeMakers For Sale Forum.

Great people here on this forum for sure. :)

Made by Gary Stiener. He makes them out of old steel files. If you have a design that you want and it fits on a file, he can make it. Just let me know if you want some more info.

your post was reported, due to someone concerned by your linking to a non member maker's promotional web page. I had the same response initially but decided to let it slide, so consider this a friendly nudge to reconsider your approach to promoting his work here.

scott gossman builds some good outdoors knives and coudl likly hit all your specs
if i didnt have so much other stuff i need to finish i woudl give it a shot

Sounds a bit like like you're describing a Charlie Mike knife.

The images are mine. Those knifes are made by my grandfather, but he doesn't even own a computer. I am looking at becoming his means of reaching a larger crowd, but for the time being it's just for show. I apologize if it breaks the rules.

my suggestion, then, would be for you to post actual images of the knives using an image hosting site

it's totally acceptable for non member's work to be posted in this forum, (provided it's not blatantly promotional) and the best way to do that is by following the advice I just dropped. As it stands, your intentions aren't self evident, due to your providing a link as opposed to a photo

this isn't necessarily a 'breaking the rules' thing, which is why I brought it up in this thread, instead of behind the scene. There's nuance to forum etiquette, and my intention here is to lay that out for you and for others who are new to the forum

I hope that you take my advice, post quality photos of your grandpa's work in this forum, and provide him with the feedback you receive. Much of that feedback will do more to help him sell knives than promotion

Cheers!
