Looking for a dagger with approximately a 5" blade, give or take an inch or so...

I pretty much fell in love with the Kershaw Trooper the first time I saw it, but because of the price I just passed it up. I'm looking for a dagger (fixed blade, obviously) about that size that can be used for cutting, not just stabbing. I like the slim profile of the Trooper, and how, in relation to it's length, the blade is narrow. That is also handy since I plan on carrying this knife consealed (legally). It doesn't have to be of spectacular quality, but I certainly don't want anything below 440C quality, if that's an acceptable reference. I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend... whatever the price turns out to be I won't have the money for a while, so right now I'm just looking for suggestions. I might just go the distance for the Trooper afterall.

Boker Applegate/Fairbairn

The full size has a 6" blade, available in a number of configurations such as double edged, single edged, utility profile.

The small is 4 3/4" long, and is available single or double edged.

Can you tell me anything about the "420 sub zero" that the peacekeepers are made of?

Well,
I've got several Boker Applegate models and have had a SOG Desert Dagger as well. In my opinion the SOG is a little more cheaply built, but it does have those 3 different types of cutting edges which makes it a little more versatile, a lot of knife for the money, on the other hand the Boker's are just tough knives, that will work well as either fighters, or as utility knives, although they won't do as well in that role, as it wasn't what they were primarily designed for.

Thats why I mentioned the different blade options.

example( if you just want dagger shape in general:

Or the regular double edged version:

Cold Steel's 420 Sub Zero is probably just 420HC. Not great at holding an edge, but acceptable, with good corrosion resistance and toughness. It could also be cheaper 420J2, which is a terrible knife steel for most utility applications. The Sub Zero probably just means its heat treated. After they heat it to glowing hot, they deep freeze it to make it harder.

I think Sub Zero is just a marketing term, since most steel for knives is heat treated in a similar process (AFAIK), and they don't want people to avoid their knives because of 420's bad reputation. Some extra cheapo imports probably aren't even heat treated, though.

The SOG knives use AUS-6A, which is very comparable to 440A. 420HC is just a tad under 440A in edge holding. When properly heat treated, 420HC is my choice over 440A. 420HC has a bit of Vanadium which may be why I can get many of my 420HC blades sharper than my 440A blades.

The Boker A-F is 440C, which is one of my favorite steels. It may be what you are looking for, try to get one that is double edged with one side serrated for the most versatility. It looks like a very sturdy, well designed knife.

I know you said you wanted a fixed blade...but have you thought about the CS Ti-Lite? It IS a little expensive...but a neat knife anywho. :P

I'd get the Boker Applegate/Fairbairn...Or if you want to go up to a 7&1/2 inch blade, the Cold Steel Tai Pan is pretty hard to beat, and is alot more dagger than the little Kershaw Trooper...(I have owned all 3 of these, and the Tai Pan is my favorite of the 3.).

If you are on a budget Camillus makes some boot knives that are good for the money. The Gerber Guardian looks like it could be a good concealed knife. As for the CS Ti-lite, now they have a cheaper one with a Zytel handle.

Before the Kershaw Trooper Kershaw marketed a boot knife with a 5" blade called the "Military Boot Knife". The same knife was also marketed by Hoffritz and a few others. They were made in Germany and of very good quality. Going price is around $50

Well, I have a Oyabun which is made of the same steel,
one good swipe at a moderate sized branch left a small ding on the cutting edge. It arrived not too sharp, and the encounter with the branch left it pretty much blunt.

Thats what $50.00 or so will get you from Cold Steel.
Well it looks kind of mean, and it will do until i get my mits on a magnum ix.

What do you guys think about this knife? It seems kind of cheap, especially the sheath, but the name is usually trustworthy.

I don't suppose you have a link or some information that might help me find a retailer? I searched for "militairy boot knife", "kershaw militairy boot knife", "hoffritz militairy boot knife" and other variations of your information on google.com, but I couldn't find anything on this knife. I just kept coming up with the Trooper and various boot knives.

I've got a sog pentagon I'd be willing to let go or swap off if you're interested.

I've been considering that one closely, along with the Gerber Defender.
