Im going to be picking up a new knife, I'm thinking a Benchmade approx. 3.5 inchs, id prefer d2 or s30v, open to other brands, not interested in a spyderco paramilitary, suggestions?

I have a benchmade grizzly creek. Great knife but the recurve is a bit annoying.

The benchmade 940 is a really popular one that doesn't have the "tactical look" to it. The ADAMAS is very much the opposite of it but is also much bigger.

As much of a bad rap as Microtech has, I have a DOC in S30V and I love it even though it is on the heavy side.

Zero Tolerance makes some beefy blades, but I have no experience with them even though I hear they are pretty good.

Depends on what you like...perhaps a few questions will help guide responses to suggestions that will fit your needs:

- intended use (outdoor / wilderness, box cutting, office work, etc..)?
- size / weight preferences?
- military looking vs more classic / subdued?
- concealment vs conspicuous carry?
- handle / grip preferences (aluminum, G10, FRN)
- lock type (frame, liner, lock back, slip joint)?
- blade type (serrated, plain, hybrid)?

Personally, for a 3.5" I would look at the ZT lineup, a Spyderco Southard, Benchmade 477 Emissary, Kershaw Blur, Ontario XM-1, Cold Steel Recon 1, etc...

If you can have a bit longer blade, I'd suggest the classic - Benchmade 710. Really great knife in a perfectly slim, pocketable package, with a D2 blade (other variants have been made, too). It's easily on of my favorites.

^^^+1

the 710 D2 is a great knife. Really like the blade / handle ratio. The slight recurve makes it a great cutter, and it is slight enough that its not too hard to sharpen (I use a sharpmaker).

In comparison the 710 is more pocket friendly, and more cutting edge.

Handle is slimmer than than the Griptilian, since getting the 710, my Grips have ended up in a bag and another in a drawer...

ZT 0566, Spyderco Manix 2 G-10, Spyderco Paramilitary 2... Those would be my top 3 in that price range. I have the 0566 and Manix 2 and love them both. The 0566 goes to work with me most days.

A slight price bump puts you into ZT 0801, 0550, or 0770cf or Spyderco Domino range.

These price points are loaded.

Not knowing exactly what you need it to do, I'll join in and recommend the 710. It is the quintessential benchmade, and one of my personal favorites. You really can't go wrong buying one.

Take a look at Kershaw Junkyard Dog with composite blade: I think it is a good deal and still available in many online stores.
BM 710 is a good knife too, available in D2 and now in M390 (Knifeworks exclusive) which kind of beats s30v in my opinion.

For Benchmade in that price range I would recommend the 710. Also if you dont mind the factory scales, the Ritter Griptilian is a really great blade in S30v.

Zero Tolerance has several blades for that price and less, the 550, 801, 770cf, 566. I really enjoy the Elmax that ZT uses and the S35vn on the 550 is really great imo.

I own all of the ones I listed except for the 770cf and I find myself carrying the 801 and 550 the most. I have been carrying the Ritter Grip with me quite a bit recently but I do have an after market set of G10 scales on it that really made it 100% better to me.

If you really want a benchmade and are willing to spend a bit more the 581 barrage is pretty fantastic. Its got a m390 blade, built pretty tough too. I carry the smaller 586 regularly, it splits pocket time with my 940-1, and absolutely love it.

...Benchmade...approx 3.5"...S30V...about $170...You are describing the 940. It fits the description perfectly.
But yeah, like others have said, look at the ZT line up. If you don't mind Elmax and a flipper, the 801 is pretty popular.

I will have about 170 to spend but i i might spend more on the right knife

Weight isnt much of a factor to me, g10 handle, plain blade, and liner, frame and axis type locks

How about this one? S30V plain-edge 3.5" blade. G10 handles. Axis lock. $175.

How about a Ritter Griptilian? It's currently one of my favorite folders. I've been carrying it for about a year now, and like it even more now than when I first got it. No g10 handles, but an aftermarket set won't set you back too much.

I have a custom made Gil Hibben D2 folding Elmer Keith lock back skinner knife. 3.5 inch blade. Very sturdy design. If you go to the Hibben knives web site then you will see 1 listed for sale RIGHT NOW.

If this is your first Benchmade, I would suggest the standard 940 (or 943). Benchmade makes a lot of great knives, but the 940 is a knife that you will find most knife fans have at least one of, it is liked by people who prefer small knives, it is liked by people who prefer big knives, and it's the big blade in a compact shell that is comfortable to carry every day and can thin slice a tomato or cut copper wire.

The Ritter Griptilian is also an awesome Benchmade. And I agree the 710 is hard to beat...now Benchmade is making a 710 in M390 steel, which I think it will be hard to suggest the standard 710 given the M390 710 is not much more expensive and M390 is a great steel.

I second the Manix 2 . Built like a tank and available in s30v steel. I love mine.
