Yeah, Bic, I know ;) I'm thinking something a little nicer...

I don't smoke... but I'm looking to get a gift for a friend who does, so I'm looking for a decent lighter that looks nice and will get his smokes going. I don't need anything that's gonna melt holes through ceramic or singe the hairs off his face or anything, just something moderately simple.

I was looking at windmills, but after reading things on this board, I've heard so much back and forth about them that I'm not sure. This will be used primarily for smoking, so I don't need something that's going to be lit for extended periods of time.

Just looking for people's opinions. Thanks!

Nothing like a classic zippo. You can get really fancy ones if you want a slightly more expensive gift.

I second that. A nice slim line Zippo for a woman or lady.
You can get any kind of design or scroll work done and they even come in Sterling. Lifetime Guarantee, and Made in the USA.

Cheers,
Hal

I bought a serling silver, engraved zippo... thin model... and it only cost me $20(canadian). Had mine now for 5 months, and just had to buy more flint, and almost done the 2nd fuel can.

zippos are quiet rugged, and I've dropped mine more times than I wish to count. I normally just drop it in my pocket, and if grabbing my keys out, it tends to fall out too. I have a leather strap on pouch, buying a clip on pouch as soon as the local shop gets it in. The strap on just tends to get in the way, and it's also designed for a thick model.

I also vote for a zippo, mine has been used daily for almost a year now, no problems and always lights up. And the best part is its only $20.

Ditto, vote for Zippo here too... Only lighter I have ever had I can consistantly light at 0 degrees in heavy wind on a chairlift while skiing, and I have tried MANY others.

Does anybody else's Zippo use lighter fluid like mad? I don't even smoke, I just use mine for the occasional paracord burning. I left mine alone for about a month, and poof, no more fluid.

The flame coming out of mine is about 2.5" long (measuring past the shroud). Is there any way to adjust this?

The fluid evaporates over time.
I've been trying some experiments with duct tape so the vapor can't get out. If the vapor can't get out, the evaporation should also stop. But the longest I've tried this is a few days, which is not enough time for the fuel to evaporate completely. (But after being taped shut for three days, the lighter reeked of fuel when I opened it--which tells me that the vapors were trapped inside as intended.)
Check back here in a few weeks.

Get a fine pair of scissors and trim the wick down. Less wick generally equates to a shorter flame, in my experience.

Oops...after I re-read your post, I see it's for a guy.

Still vote for the zippo, just not the slim.

Hal

It worked; thanks! Now if I could only figure out how to do those tricks on Zippotricks.com...

Too bad there exists the following mathematical formula:

my manual dexterity + dangerous things (fire/knives/airsoft/soldering irons/power tools) = hurt

I like Helios or windmill .Great torch lighters that are completely wind and water proof and last forever.

I actually like the large flame on my zippo... I have my wick centered in the chimeny, and by tilting towards the lid after you light, the flame will increase nicely. I don't need to move my wick, as my 1.5" flame doesn't eat up any extra wick.
