My son wants a double bit for Christmas, he is small framed and currently uses a generic boys axe from harbor freight for splitting wood with me.
He loves my full size double but it’s too large and heavy for him, so I am looking for something similar in size and weight to the cold steel trail boss but with a double bit head.
Budget is tight this year so won’t be able to consider the pricey options, what is out there for under $100 or preferably half that amount, that fits the above criteria?

You might get lucky and find a cruiser pattern axe head for $50, possibly less, not much less if at all, that you may need to hang or rehang depending.

Your junk shops, antique shops, flea markets, yard sales(when all those come back and or reopen).
Online auction sites.

Not sure who offers what new.

AFAIK currently nobody manufactures that kind of axes at that price range.
Vintage Cruiser heads weight usually around 2.5 lbs. If you look around fleabay you can probably find Old TT or Collins Boy size doubles (should be marked "2²")
Trail Boss head weights 1.5lbs. If 2.5lbs is too heavy, the only thing that comes to my mind is to buy Council Tool Saddle axe and hang it on 26 inch handle. https://www.baryonyxknife.com/cotosputsaax.html
You would need to ask FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades if the eye of Saddle axe is big enough to support longer handle.
Actually, it would be pretty cool, tiny Adirondack Cuiser axe if you mount it on 26 inch single bit Boy's Axe haft.

Yes, it's a larger-than-normal eye on the Council Saddle Axe specifically so it can accept a larger handle if the user so chooses.
Would just about any boys axe handle fit?
I would prefer a straight handle for it, any suggestions in a straight handle 26” long?
