Hello, as most of you know father's day is coming up and im going to pick up a knife for my father. Unfortunately, im not too familar with the type of knife he likes...so i could use some help. Heres what hes looking for:

Closed Length: 2.5-3in
Handle: Bone or Wood
Steel:non-preference(would like to have good edge retention, sharp, and can stand a little bit of prying.)
Lock:liner or better(anything but slip joint)

And the hardest part...it needs to stay around $50. Thanks for any help in advance, it will be much appreciated.

Oh and one last thing, it needs to be easily openned, not nesscarily one handed. He has huge fingers and has a hard time with small objects, so a thumbstud or hole would be ideal.

Have you given thought to some of the buck classics? Those are some nice lockback knives.

Maybe a Buck 112? no thumb studs or holes but he should be able to get it open no problem. A bit large but i think it would make a great father's day gift.

Yeah, maybe look into the Buck 110's and 112's. Going to be hard to find much of a selection for a knife like that for $50 and under, with natural handle materials and all.

For about $115 you could get the Kershaw Nakamura:

Take a look at these Queen Mini(?) Folding Hunter liner locks: http://www.queencutlerycollectors.com/catalog/2003.htm

D-2 blade, and can be had with carved stag bone (really nice :) ) or cocobolo wood. The "smooth bone" I don't believe is real bone. (I have both the Carved and smooth bone versions)

It's a little longer that you asked for (2.5 - 3" is really small IMHO) but is very pocketable and provides a good puchase for a small knife.

D-2 takes one heck of an edge and holds it, but you gotta teach him not to pry.

These are a real bargain for the price. Don't be put off by the longish lead times quoted on Queen Cutlery Collectors home page. I've always recieved my orders in a week...week and a half.

I've had my eye on the pearl handled one, elegant little sucker. :D

Opinion question: do you think black micarta would fit the bill of wood/bone? If so, would you prefer it to english briarwood? Im looking at the Al Mar Osprey(1001BM or BR) that New Graham has for $61. Its got Aus8 steel and its still within my price range.

Knives - Seki Cut Hiro Little Blue Liner Lock, Quincewood SC-160
M-SC-160MSRP: $99.95 Smart Shoppers Discount Price: $70.16

From http://store.camping-cooking-supplies.com/sc-160.html

Know it's somewhat higher than you wanted to pay but VG-10 isn't a bad steel and it's got a titanium liner.

Hope this helps.

Go to www.agrussell.com and poke around. If you go to Knives >> By Type >> Folding >> Locking, you'll see a bunch of good choices aorund your price range. Look elsewhere around the site too, there's a ton of knives there.

Dude! I LIKE (the look of)that knife. Guess I'll have to give my daughter a raise to her allowance, let her wash (& detail) the car for extra money and reward a few 'A's to round it up. Boy is she gonna owe me if she wants to buy me that for Dad's Day..... :D
I LOVE guilt holidays!
