IM currently being taught Israeli knife tactics from a Muay Thai student of mine in the US Army.
IM looking at the Microtech Currahee (single edged knives only) and the RAT RC-5 as fighting knives. I need something that has some finger guard behind the choil, nothing were a block might result in my fingers getting lost and a pommel good enough to do some damage if used.
Any comparisons of these two or any suggestions, I want to stay in the 250$ and under range.

and hello eveyone, nice forum.
My last knife purchase was a Microtech troodon, wharncliffe blade.

Why only single edge?
Get a Cold Steel Tai Pan, two edges for the price of one. :D
Failing that, get a good sized bowie with a sharpened swedge, and go read some stuff my James. A. Keating. In reverse order. ;)

Due to some of the slashing movements a single edge blade is preferred to avoid cutting ones self. I understand the use of a dagger/dual edged blade for close combat, as in high stress situations you may try to use the spine instead of the edge to cut. But with the Israeli style, you are taught to become the aggressor when the fight goes underway.

Try Busse Combat knives. I don't know much about them, but I know they have a strong following.

I wouldnt go with an RC5 as a fighter. Not what it was designed for. RC6 would be a little better I think. I think you should also look at a Becker BK7.

Yeah, the RAT RC5 was not designed as a fighter, but more of a "survive-r." The RC6 would probably be better but I dont know about the BK7. Im guessing you want to slash and cut, so something light, and agile. Maybe a Kabar USMC, Cold Steel SRK, CRKT Hissatsu, or something like that. With a $250 budget, you shouldnt have a hard time finding one.

Your best bet would be to actually handle and hold a few knives, so you get the feel for the balance and whatnot, to see if you like it. I know sometimes that may not be possible so getting opinions from forums and watching youtube videos is the way to go. I guess so far your on the right track. Im sure others will soon throw in their $0.02 soon..

No matter how you train with martial artist, things in street do not work as you train. Completely other set of rules. You don't want slasher knife. You want piercer. You don't want to hurt the guy you want to kill him. remember that when you look a knife for self defence or gihter knife. You want knife that is most effective taking man's life in most effective way (but you want single edged):

An Emerson CQC-8 has good blade design. You may want to look that has similar blade design in fixed blades. It has excellent thrusting capabilities and very effective blade design. If you find similar design in fixed blade, that is most likely one you want.

The RC5 weighs about a pound and a half. It would be like fighting with a brick. It is an unbeatable SERE knife, but when it comes to fighting a similarly armed opponent the knife will be useless. The Currahee is a solid blade but not much of a fighter, more of a combat utility knife. It too is heavy. You want something well balanced with a grip with defined direction. If you're looking for a fighter, the Applegate Faibairn that Boker makes is dynamite. I'd also recommend a SOG Seal Pup. Both are very well balanced fighting knives with sure grips. And both can take a ridiculous edge. Note, these are not survival or bushcrafting knives, nor are they really a utility knife. They are too soft to use in this manner compared to other similarly priced knives. For a designated fighter I would look at those two. Your options go way up if you dabble in custom knives.

have a beautiful wilson combat elite mint, s30 v but is 330$. this knife is for combat only. could slice food if desired.
do'nt know why i ordered it since it's strictly a killer only
looked awful sexy in Knives Illustrated years back.
certainly have no use for it now

Double-edged blades are illegal to carry here in California. There are less issues to deal with using a single-edged blade.

If you think slashing is only for "hurting" people, you don't know what you're talking about. An entire karambit style of fighting wasn't created just to hurt. A good cut to the neck, wrists, arms, or face are powerful deterrents. If you're that hellbent on killing the guy (though at that point in time, you could probably run), then follow up viciously. I doubt the assailant will enjoy it.

I just got a Swamp Rat bandicoot and that is a fast, nasty and dangerous knife. I like the Scrap Yard SS4 alot, but this is faster for me.
