Hey guys! This is my first post on here. I work in the automotive industry and I have a front staff member and now good friend whom has taken to the EDC lifestyle lately. Got him a good hanky, a good flashlight and now I’m hoping to replace his knife. His budget is $150 and under. He loves sheep’s foot style blades and flipper tabs. However, recently he took to my Brat by Kizer. The integral smooth handle and large size with both flipper tab and button lock really spoke to him. His only wish is a sheep’s foot/ cleaver style maybe even a tanto. I am hoping someone will know of something other than the Kizer Sheepdog. I’ve thought about the Demko AD20.5 but he does like a bit larger knife. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If he likes the Chevalier, but still wants to try a tanto, he could also look at the Civivi Brazen. (But, it is liner lock instead of button.) Here is mine:

Tantos are silly, unless he's going to be doing a lot of stabbing of car bodies or body armor with it. Talk him out of a tanto.

Modified sheepsfoot (with just a bit of belly) is a great blade shape; easy to sharpen and good for most things.

As far as EDC lifestyle goes, he should have a Swiss army knife too. If we're honest about our uses, it's really all that most of us need. A strong flashlight and swift feet is a better self defense tool than a knife, IMO. Have him look at the Victorinox Super Tinker.

Aww, what’s wrong with tantos? Are there things they don’t do well or do you just not like them?

I love the look of em and haven’t noticed any negatives yet at least.

I like the look of tanto also and recently ordered another one. I consider the bend in the sharpened part of the tanto similar to the belly of other knives, just an angle instead of a curve. It's definitely not just for stabbing.

Right, I also like the strong tip and not just for stabbing. I also find the flat part of the front useful for scraping. I was just curious if there are some negatives I haven’t come across or know about.

It’s a preference thing. Also, some folks have trouble sharpening tantos.

I used to live near an oil patch and the lady I spoke to at the local knife store said everyone in that line of work who comes in looking for a new blade insists on getting a tanto. The scraping capability, in addition to the extra tough point, is ideal for their use apparently.

Edit: I’m carrying this badboy today..
