I'm looking for a fixed blade(7-9") for general camp chores, $160 limit. What direction should I look? The Esee 6 looks good, but want to see if there's something in the 7-9 inch range worth considering before I pull the trigger.

7"-9" is a big blade for general camp duties. 4"-6" is a much more versatile size.

but since you ask:

teh Ka-Bar USMC is a revered blade for many, very good reasons. the Ka-Bar bowie knives are a very nice blade at a pretty reasonable price point.

May run a couple bucks over budget, but if you are considering the ESEE 6, why don't you look at the Junglas? It gets rave reviews from everyone that has one.

Buy a used fehrmann or koster in 3v then turn your friends 1095 knife over and cut the blade off of it with a hammer . These can easily be bought here or on ebay within your budget.

If you are set on 7-9" then I'd go with a Becker BK9 but if you are open to something a little shorter (but no less mighty) have a look at the Becker BK2. Great stuff!
