I was looking to buy a pair of folders, one for me and one for my ten year old son so that we can pass the time together whittling. I would appreciate any suggestions that folks would have.

you might inquire in the traditional subforum, too.
a whittler pattern slipjoint with a clip point main blade is my preference, queen makes a good one but they come notoriously dull and can be a pain to sharpen. the case seahorse whittler is nice, and a few other companies make that pattern if you search a bit. boker also makes a nice whittler with carbon steel available, and they aren't too expensive. good luck hunting!

Believe it or not, I like whittler patterns for whittling. ;)

The reason is that most whittler patterns come with a coping or wharncliffe blade that is a very helpful shape for a lot of cuts.

However, I suggest you consider a small Mora fixed blade designed for carving instead or in addition. Patterns 120 and 122 are ideal, and they are available at Ragweed Forge for about $15.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do like the Boker but the Case might be more aaccessible in my neck of the woods. Often cross border internet orders get slapped with brokerage fees when shipped North of the border.

Take a look at the seahorse whittler Case offers. I don't own one myself, but I've handled a few, and I've heard good things about them over in the traditional subforum.
