hey guys, i'm looking for a smallish folding saw. do you guys know of a good one?

i had been looking at the knives of alaska saws - they have a bone saw and a wood saw - but they are fixed.

i guess i'd prefer a folder for its convenience, but is there a really good quality one out there? or should i get one of the knives of alaska saws?

tyia!

I suspect this is going to get moved to Gadgets & Gear soon. In the meantime, though, I think you'll find a whole lot of people recommending Silky Saws as the best. You'll also find those who recommend Fiskars' slide-out saw for those concerned with weight. It's only 3 oz. and works very well.

I got an Outdoor-Life folding saw in a package with their camp axe. It's ugly and plasticy, but it put's my slightly larger Fiskar's saw to shame. Even beats my hardware store 24" bow saw. Steel is SK-5 and I believe it's made in Taiwan and imported by United.

Silky is the only way to go. I had quite a few folding saws before I discovered silky. I know only carry a large pocket boy when hiking (it's even starting to edge out my Wetterlings hatchet!)

gerber used to have a good folding saw, i use mine for dressing deer, i dont know if the new ones are as good mine is ~ 10 yrs old.

Here is a link to Silky Saws. It seems that they have a great reputation.

I have an Ibuki 390 coming if they ever get it off back order.
The GomBoy 210 seems like a good choice for a folding saw.

The Fiskars saw with the retractable blade cuts very well, costs around $10 and weighs only 3 1/2 oz.

The Swedish Laplander saw (also sold by Kershaw) is a little sturdier/ better made but it costs and weighs more.

I don't think you will go wrong with either.

Someone also gave a very positive and detailed review here on bladeforums a while ago

The Bahco Laplander is the most popular outdoor saw in Scandinavia.

Pasted from their site:
  • High-quality folding pruning saw suitable for gardening and other outdoor pursuits
  • Lightweight and comfortable - only 175 grams (6oz) in weight
  • High-quality Sandvik steel blade
  • Non-stick clade coating helps blade glide thorough even the most difficult materials
  • Bahco XT toothing cuts in both directions
  • Blade locks safely in both the open and closed positions
  • Ideal for camping and fishing

I do yard work for a living. Mostly cutting grass, trimming bushes/small trees, leaf removal and mulching. I got a Silky about 3-4 years ago. This thing is great. Small, very light, sharp as can be and very durable.

Hi,

I spent a lot of time researching folding saws and eventually bought the Fiskars/Gerber Gator Exchange-A-Blade folding saw.

The saw comes with a coarse blade and a fine blade (suitable for bone) and all fit into a sheath which can be belt worn.

The grip, locking mechanism and blade retention are all excellent, but I saved the best till last, this saw cuts with such ease its a real pleasure to use and own. I love mine.
